I have three wonderful Nikon S RF lenses: the 35mm f/1.8, the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/2 that I use on my Nikon SP. I have been looking at adapters to use them on my Leica M3 & M4-P. It seems that there are a number of solutions from Amedeo & Orion.

I found this thread:

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110454

But I still have some questions as I confused.

1. The 35mm f/1.8 doesn't fit the Amedeo adapter. Rear element is too big. Any suggested solutions? I need the adapter to bring up the 35mm frame lines in my M4-P.

2. With the 85mm lens how to I get the 90mm frame lines to appear on the M3 & M4-P?

4. Any issues using the Amedeo with the 50mm f/1.4 lens?

Thanks!

I use an Amedeo S to LTM adapter and then a Leica LTM to M adapter for my W-Nikkor C 35/2.5 and Millennium Nikkor-S 50/1.4. The frame lines depends on the LTM-M adapter used. I have no problems with focusing the 50/1.4.

1. With the 35mm f/1.8, the problem isn't the adapter. Even if you can attach the lens to an adapter (the lens does attach to some Amedeo type adapters btw), the metal shroud around the rear element is too thick and will foul on the focus cam follower on an LTM or M body. The metal shroud around the rear element of the LTM version of the lens is thinner to enable it to clear the focus cam follower on the body (see photo below).

2. You could get a screw mount version of the Amedeo adapter and then add the appropriate L-M adapter.

4. The S-mount 50mm f/1.4 lens works great on an Amedeo adapter. Amedeo is offering two choices now: a new type of adapter only for internal mount lenses that focuses in the same direction as Leica lenses and has the same focus throw as a 50mm Elmar, or the standard Amedeo adapter (in LTM or M-mount) that can be used with both internal and external mount S-mount lenses and focuses in the same direction and has the same focus throw as a Nikon rangefinder.

Would another option be to have Mr. Miyazaki convert the lens to M?

I am always wondering with the current exchange what that would cost?

How does this lens compare to the Canon 35/2?

Miyazaki-san can convert it, but its an irreversible conversion. Once done, the lens is butchered for life. The quality of the work is very poor so not really recommended. One of the lenses he converted for me front focused badly and I had to repair the focus cam on the lens myself. From memory, he charged me about 50,000 yen each for the two reissue lenses I got done.

IMO this lens is much better than the Canon 35/2 LTM. Far superior corner performance and zero distortion.

The 35mm 1.8 lens came with my SP 2005. I'm not about to cobble it up. Just would like to be able to use it on occasion with my M4-P. I'll just get adapters for the 85mm & 50mm 1.4.

In case anyone is interested, here are some side by side shots of a hacked converted-by-Miyazaki-san M-mount lens and an original S-mount lens. Both these lenses are the 2005 reissue 3.5cm F1.8. On the M-mount version, you can see the focus cam (which is just a piece of plastic tube glued in there) is sloped. The lens doesn't focus properly if the slope isn't right.

Interesting topic you guys. The 1.8/35 Nikkor is surely a desirable lens and have seen clean LTM copies go for a lot of money here in Sapporo. Even the S mount copies demand a respectable price.

One solution for using that lens on a Leica with an adapter that I thought of is to use it on rangefinderless body: eg 1c, 1f 1g, Md Mda Md-2...

Do you know of an adapter for a rangefinderless body?
Or one for the Sony-E mount?
