*what would be the best latex paint to use for covering up pinholes? Does anyone know of a particular brand or type?

Well,
I bought a Nikon S off of ebay. It is in great shape and mechanically sound, although I knew the shutter would defiantly need to be replaced. It does, I can see right through it, whatever the doping material was that was on the shutter has begun to flake off. Now I need to know who does shutter replacements. Its the first shutter curtain. I'm not sure I'm up for doing it myself, I'm pretty handy with tools but I don't know how complicated things get inside of the S shutter assembly.

If anyone has any recommendations on shutter replacement shops, or techniques let me know.

By the way Brian, I got your lens and it looks great, but you'll have to wait on pictures from it.

Joe,
Back in 2005, DAG did a CLA and one shutter curtain replacement on my Nikon S for $300, he did a nice job for me, now the camera works like new. Email him for your needs. His Email address is doncam@chorus.net

Well, I've sent him a message. I'm trying to get some prices for now. I would like to be relatively thrifty about this.

Darn I thought I sent DAG an email but apparently not, my email says the address was undeliverable. Are you sure its the right address?

That is the problem with the S, it will cost a lot to fix and it is not a particularly nice user. You might want to (like me) save up the bucks for an S2 or buy a Bessa R2S. You might want to check out Pete Smith Nikon at
nikonsmith at aol.com
I think his price would be close to Dag though.

I've already Sent Pete Smith an e-mail. Well, I think I'll see what I can find out, I may decide to go ahead and let someone else take this project on and get an s2. For now though I think I'll give it a try.

I was actually thinking of paint, that is what is flaking off anyway. Yes it is an early S. The serial is 6096764. I figured paint might be a no no, but I might give it a try. I'm ok with ugly on the inside. The camera is in great shape cosmetically, but I'm not a collector.

I tried Pete Smith and he informed me that he does not currently have a reliable material supplier.

What brand of latex paint would you recommend?

I'm thinking more and more I might want to sell this camera and go for a user condition s2.

DAG said almost $285, but that was to bring a camera back to full working order which I don't think is needed with this camera. All of the speeds seem fine, even the slow ones.

Others say they have had it done for $180.

If I were to take the money spent on refurbishing plus the money from the camera and maybe a little extra I could probably get a user s2. I don't know, I might do that.

Otherwise it is paint the curtains, which I am still iffy about.

actually, come to think of it I think the shutter curtains have been painted anyway. It looks like there is paint flaking off on the bad shutter, and the other appears to still have a full coat. Maybe painting wouldn't be such a bad idea.
