Nikon S3 2000

The best solution that I found was to take the helical apart (easy, about 15 minutes time-consuming) then cleaning the threads with ultrafine steel wool to remove the bronze oxydization layer, then cleaning and degreasing them with dishwashing soap, a toothbrush, and distilled water (with abundant rinsing), then dry them up quickly with an hairdryer, then, when back to normal temperature, applying a thin and small film of modern ball bearings lithium grease, then reassemble the threads, rotate the helical from infinity to close-up several times so that the grease spreads out evenly, then install it back on the camera.

Doing so I get a silent and buttery smooth focusing helical, which allows very accurate focus and makes the camera a true joy to use. I know no $$$$ Leica lens which is as smooth and joyful to focus :D

All Nikon RFs which I treated like this several years ago still have the same delightful focusing action.
