I have a black Nikon S3 "Olympic" that I plan on selling in San Francisco or nearby, perhaps in a local camera store that sells on consignment. They take 30%. What's a fair price? Is this indeed an S3 Olympic? Have I characterized it accurately on the web pages I built for it?

I'm not in a huge hurry to part with it, but I already have two Leicas (M4 and CL), and I'm not aiming at becoming a collector.

Consignment sale would be very convenient, and I don't plan on keeping any of the $ for myself. More important is Kiu's feedback. I'm pretty much in the dark, except for what I've learned from posts here.

You might want to watch this auction (link above) on the Yahoo Japan auction site.

The auction is due to finish next Sunday evening (local time) and the starting bid is 200,000 yen (approx. $1,625).

I expect it will go to 350,000 yen (approx. $2,850) or more.

It only costs $2.00 to list it here in the RFF, it's cheap and worth a try as you already have URL for the images.
I would ask $3500 or best offer

Looking at the images I would rate this camera EXC+

Please Note KEH.com is advertising a couple of these "Olympic" Bodies for around $2000 to $3000 for the last year!!
They sold the lenses for $1000 to $1800 if memory serves me correctly.
You may want to check their site for a "Quote"

You can tell from the shape of the lens that it is the proper "Olympic" 50/1.4, one of the finest 50mm lenses ever made by anyone.

Values are hard to pin down because these don't change hands very often. Posting an ad on RFF probably won't get you top dollar but might get you someone who will actually use the camera. The "Olympic" lens is so rare that you hardly ever see photos taken by it. Nikon reissued it in 2000 with a reissued S3 camera. The "Millenneum Nikkor 1.4" is a multicoated version of the Olympic and has an image quality comparable to the latest computer-designed Leitz lenses, which is really saying something for a 43-year-old design.

If you have a Leitz 50/1.4 with your M4 kit, I know that several people on this forum would be interested in seeing some images taken by the Nikon lens compared to the Leitz lens.

As oppurtunistic as my last reply implied:eek:
I'd rather have Katcher keep Jim's camera and sell his Leicas(M4 & CL:p )

Nikon S3 Olympic Value

Nikon S3 Olympic Value

First, thanks to everyone for helping me reckon the "value" of this camera. My Leitz lenses (all Summicron F2) are 35 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm. My 50 mm is circa 1970s -- not the very best possible 50 mm Summicron. But all my lenses, and the Olympic Nikkor, are plenty sharp enough for hand held photos with Tri-X. For sharper impages, I would use a tripod and slower film, or use my Rolliflex (2.8 Planar!). The really hard thing with photography (after getting everything technically perfect) is standing in the right place and releasing the shutter at the right moment.

The picture of me that Kiu posted above was taken by my late friend Jim with his F3 (SLR!) and 105 mm Nikkor. Many of the images on the roll he shot that day were not sharp, because I'm standing under the shade of a redwood tree and the camera was hand held. But the portrait is quite nice.

I did think about keeping Jim's camera, along with all my Leica gear and Nikon F3 (35 2.0, 50 1.4, 55 macro, 105 2.5) and Nikkormat (35 2.0), but that was when I imagined (hoped) that it was worth less than $1,000. In fact, Jim left a lot more friends than me, as well as the problem of archiving all his negatives (a small grant to student working to do this and to print a limited edition of his best work is one thought). So, you see, "value" is a slippery concept.

Eventually, I will post the resolution of this story.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

It sold for 501,000 yen. According to http://www.xe.com/ucc/ that's about US$4,062 :bang:

Thanks, Jon!

I'm about to step out the door for a backpacking trip. No camera; everything we carry in is carefully weighed.

Anyway, $4000 is not too expensive! This camera, although represented by two lousy pictures, showed no brassing!! and it came with the porper case(broken strap:eek: )
There are sellers on ebay that ask way way way more than that!!

Funny thing is, I bet if Katcher finds the box he can ask $5000 and get it!!

Interesting to note that the focus scale on this camera is in feet rather than metres like most other "Olympic" S3s.
