The III is fully manual with no meter. The IV is fully apeture priority auto. The V has both exposure method controls.

It is not a rangefinder, but a viewfinder and focus is by guestimation. I have the V and I like it very much. But I would get your sons a p&s digital camera with a waterproof housing. They will have more fun with it.

Just a day ago I saw an ad for a P+S digicam that pictured it totally underwater in a fish bowl.

I have a Nikonos V which is a constant companion in my Klepper kayak. Great camera.
The original Nikonos through the III model are mechanical cameras with no built-in meter. They work well but be aware that the III is very desirable (read collectable) and somewhat pricey. The IV-a was the first of the electronic Nikonos and has a spotty reputation (suspect electronics). My V has worked well the ten+ years I've owned it.

well yeah, I did not think about RF-viewfinder, however one is a wedding photographer and the other, well I am trying to get him to shoot more. [I gave both a Pentax ME super and several lenses] #2 son is into pottery, painting and other art skills and I am encouraging him to use the camera too. He plans on teaching pottery when he finishes school.
Oh and it will be MY camera.
I have also thought about the sea & sea we will see how my bids go on evilbay

BY the way if you like the 35mm 2.5, RF lens , the nikonos lens is the same design.
