No camera bags allowed at Hearst Castle--what do I do?

I would have to agree with Erik.

Just use one lens. There's no point to have to carry a ton of lenses anyway as at least in my case, it just only complicates things. Pick a lens and use it to the best of your ability. You'd be surprised with what you might end up with by doing so.

Roger Hicks: I have been a subscriber to Amateur Photographer magazine since 1990 and I continue to look forward to each weekly issues' article on the last page written by you. I also enjoy your wife's articles in Black and White Photography magazine very much. Both of these British publications are my favorites! Keep up the great writing and capturing of images, both of you!

Thank'ee kindly! Where are you?

I discovered no my recent trip to Hawaii that no bags of any kind are permitted at the Pearl Harbor Memorial. In the end, I just didn't have time to visit the Memorial. But if I had time, I would taken my M8 with a 28 mm CV Ultron lens and a 90 f2 Leica lens. That would have been all I needed anyway.

My wife visited Hearst Castle about 5 years ago and brought back very reasonable pictures taken with a Balda CA35 (same size & shape as a Minox), it has a fixed 35mm lens and really does "fit in a pocket".

Cheers, Robin

Oh really? When did that start? I've been there, post-911, and I sure don't remember any purse restrictions or anything like that. I assume you're talking about the part out there on the water where you need to go by ferry boat.

But back to Hearst, do they restrict bags in general? How about a fanny pack? I know they are tacky, but one of those could hold a few lenses. :)

If you want bad taste, try the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo (Google it and do the virtual room tour), and of course Disneyland.

I loved the Madonna Inn for its blatant kitsch. It's a must visit if you're in the area (IMHO).

I routinely shoot concerts with my Canon 1V and shove 6 rolls of film in one pocket and a 28/1.8 or a 50/1.4 in the other pocket of my jeans.

Sure, its not SUPER comfortable, but it works in a pinch. Wear some more suitable clothes and you'd be fine. Though an M lens would be a lot better in the pocket than a Canon EF lens.
