Seriously.
3 people within 5 minutes this morning.
"oh. I thought you had a leica there for a minute. oh well."
It's a Canon P. It's not a piece of junk. Do I really need to buy another RF just to keep the masses happy? It can use Leica lenses...doesn't that count for something?
sniff.
I just like it. ok.

Ha. I have similar experiences, except that most people I run into tend to think that any old metal 35mm camera is an "SLR" & if even if they do recognize an RF, if it's not a Leica they aren't so much disappointed as confused to find out that other companies made/make RFs.

That's why you have us, right ?
I used to get comments on my Leicas. Ever since I put a black sticker
on the symbols that has stopped.

Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?

I had a 24 year guy as a tour guide this May in Guilin, China. He saw my rangefinder camera, and asked if it was a leica. He seemed a bit puzzled when I told him that it was a Contax II, and that it was 70 years old.
I was actually quite surprised that he even recognized it as a RF, though. I did not see another RF camera during my two week vacation. About 90% of tourists, both Chinese and foreigners, had small digicams.
Hey, Rouge, can I use the title of your post as a byline?

'That's an old camera. I just got this new Olympus 10MP which is far more advanced... [and continues for about ten minutes]'
Many people have never even heard of Leica.

Sure thing. I considered using "Get over it" as the end as well... so you have choices.

I've had a few interesting comments on both my Canon P and my M6. When shooting with my Canon P once, a police woman in Glasgow asked me why I'd painted my camera silver (guess she'd never seen a chrome camera before). And some guy at a conference in Brighton last year came up to me and said of my M6 "is that a Lomo?" (I could have slapped him!)
Only twice has anyone asked "is that a Leica?", and it turned out that on both of those occasions the person had previously worked either as a camera salesman or repairer. Both lovely chaps as it turned out, and a pleasure to have met.

I've had the same response to my Bessa.

Hah. They apparently dissaproved of something else. I'm not with them anymore.
I've got new digs downtown - where the coffee is better, the workplace is more interesting, and the lunchtime shooting opportunities are ripe.
My actual response to the last guy was.
"Nope - It's a canon P, better viewfinder, and I get to act smug when someone asks if it's a Leica."

hey, they're only Zorkis
LOL!! Or... tell them, "No. It's a Motorola." Then push some imaginary button on top and add, "Old School," givin' 'em a wink and a thumbs-up as you put it up to your ear and turn away to talk into your Canon... "Hi hon! Just checkin' in..."rpsawin said:"Just tell them your camera phone broke and you are making due as best you can."

Someone seriously asked me if my Leica was a lomo, and then proceeded to tell me how artistic lomo cameras are.
I nearly punched them in the jaw. It was insulting on so many levels.

I was at the North Mississippi Hill Country Blues Picnic in Potts Camp, MS last weekend with my "stage rig" -- Bessa R, Jupiter-11, turret finder. I wasn't taking pictures at this particular instant, just bouncing a little and digging the music with the camera on its strap around my neck. It was very loud. A "serious photographer" with a monstrous Nikon DSLR wanders over and takes a long look down at the camera, and then smiles, gives a "thumbs-up", and mouths "nice" (remember it's very loud) before wandering off.
My wife looks at me with real concern and says, "was he just checking out your crotch?"

People find the "spontaneous art" aspect of Lomography seductive. I like this article's take on the whole thing:

Love or hate the Lomo thing, at least they're out there buying FILM, which only helps the rest of us. I hate to think of the day when I'll have to buy an M8 because it's the only usable body I can put my Jupiter-8 on.

People seem happy to ask , is if they are in the know.
Mostly when I am with an epson rd1.
Interesting feelings because they are so excited.
a little Leica mystique to go with the Leica glow.
