Someone seriously asked me if my Leica was a lomo, and then proceeded to tell me how artistic lomo cameras are.


I nearly punched them in the jaw. It was insulting on so many levels.

I can understand the sentiments on all sides of the aisle. When I had my Contax III people asked if it was a Leica...then read the big letters machined on front, and were utterly confused.

I also had a Lomo 6x6; pretty cool, many thought. I never quite warmed up to it, unfortunately.

I can always put a filter on the lens, and spread some glycerin on it, and get similar results. Not knocking Lomo or Holga, I'm just saying there are ways to get results other than buying a brand. People concentrate too much on brands.

Unless we're talking about beer or wine; I'd certainly run away from a bottle with "Bud" written on it. Too hard not to concentrate on the misery that brings 😀

I was under the impression that the L-CA was NOT a plastic lens camera, but a real glass lens camera. Quite sharp at that, too. Not worth $300 by any stretch of the imagination, but you can't really call it crappy.

What I've found is that most of the people who ask "Is that a Leica?" either are, or were, photoenthusiasts. They're knowledgeable enough to know the difference between SLR and RF bodies. They're also knowledgeable enough to know that Leicas don't look like an SLR, and they also know that the shining example of the RF body type is Leica. During the height of the "film days" it seemed the big three stereotypical "quality" cameras were Leicas, 'blads, and Nikon. If you couldn't get a 'blad, you got a Mamiya or a Bronica and everyone knew that it wasn't a 'blad and why you had it. Most folks I knew that owned Bronicas and Mamiyas got them simply because they couldn't afford 'blads. Same with Nikon SLRs and lenses (although to a lesser degree). Leicas were the Holy Grail of cameras. Nobody I knew back in the days could afford them. I had only seen them in pictures. The only place where I've ever seen strangers meet and instantly identify a Canon VL or a single coated Nokton was at an RFF meeting.

I talked up a guy once who thought my CLE was a Leica. Turns out he knew quite a bit about Leicas and RFs and very little about CLEs. He was surprised to find out that Leica glass fit on a CLE. When we parted it seemed to me he was on his way to buy an M mount RF. 🙂

This sort of thing has happened to me twice. Once someone ran up to me and reverently asked if my Minolta Hi Matic 9 was a Yashica. I told him no, and he was visibly diappointed🙄 The same thing happened when I was using one of my Ricohmatic TLR's.

You're correct, Stephanie. It's actually a nice little lens in there, and they are capable of good, sharp images. My wife got one before they became so expensive, and usually carries it in her purse -- just in case something worth shooting pops up during the course of the day. Can't do that with a D200. 🙂

Thanks. I really do need to get back into the darkroom, I've got a number of negatives to force prints out with.

Lethargy, on the other hand, dictates otherwise. 🙁
