Here is a pretty shot I took of the Florida sky near dusk. Shot with a ZM C Sonnar 50mm (75mm) at 200 ISO, 1/30 sec at F8

Here is the problem, the sky was dark to mid gray, not blue. Auto balance was on auto and I did no post processing. So no its not pretty.

These things happen. But I've been quite satisfied generally with auto.
I do always shoot raw+jpeg, but usually what I post to the web starts with the jpeg. In situations like this, however, I would just go to the raw and make the adjustments.

Auto WB gives hardly good results with any digital camera AFAIK. Better use manual WB for jpegs. Now raw is so much better and handy, why using jpeg if i may ask?l

Shot in RAW but I see a little post proceessing is in order.
here I set White Balance as Cloudy in Epson RAW.

Yes you could try to lighten the shadows a bit more but there is less color cast yet.

BTW, the R-d1 allows for 4 film settings. Is this only when shooting in Jpeg? Usually these settings have no effect on shots in RAW since you have more post processing freedom. Other digital cameras with RAW settings are notorious for not spelling this out. Am I correct on this?

The RAW data is data straight off the sensor. It ignores any in camera settings. The RAW converter applies a default interpretation of the data, but you can alter it any way you want. The film settings have no effect on the RAW image.
By alter you mean in Epson RAW or Adobe, etc.?

Shoot jpgs (or save your raw to jpg) then do auto color in Picassa. It is miraculous at sorting out color casts automagically.
