no new aperture

No at all surprising. I never used Aperture but always thought it didn't have much change against Lightroom and Adobe. "Photos" isn't going to be a substitute for Aperture so I feel for all the folks who are going to have to make a switch. Especially those with large libraries.
 
Well, at least we know now. I made the jump a while ago, but it's good to know for sure. It would appear that Apple is officially recommending LR as a replacement.

"According to Apple Insider, “Apple also said it is working with Adobe to help users transition to its Lightroom app for Mac.” "

So no one gets the idea that the "Photos" app will replace Aperture. Clarity is good.
 
Soooooo disappointed. I went w/ aperture because I preferred the workflow better than LR.. I dislike the adobe cloud approach (just me). I would worry that adobe will eventually fold everything into the cloud and licensing model.

I get about 90% of my work done under aperture. I hope that aperture will at least work on a couple of future osx releases before it stops.. It will give me time to transition. I also hope apple works on a library conversion export to LR.. I really would not be happy re-applying my changes all over again in LR or exporting whole libraries as TIFF16 and/or raw or to keep a computer setup for the last usable osx version.

Kind of pissed right now.

For Aperture, the writing has been on the wall for years.

LR is not cloud based yet. It can still be purchased outright. But, if that happens I will be looking at alternatives like DarkTable.

People are squeaking about loosing RAW capability with the demise of aperture, but they are forgetting that RAW capability is built into OSX - it's not part of an application.
 
not at all surprising, apple has a very short attention span when it comes to products for professionals e.g. final cut and their "office" products
 
Pixelmator (OS X only) was just upgraded to support 16 bit rendering. It is a viable alternate to LR/ps.

I have read nothing about raw support for new cameras in Yosemite. But it seems reasonable that Yosemite's Photos App will be compatible with raw from new cameras because this is an OS wide feature (not an App specific feature). Even Preview in OS 10.9 will render Xtrans raw.

Yep.. When raw is upgrade in base osx update, all mac base sw tools including preview have the support.

The big issue has always been how long it took apple to update their support vs others like adobe or capture one for example. On the other hand IMHO they did a better job of raw support for Fuji xtran sensor cameras then adobe did though.

Cant stand Lightroom.... awful software. Will stick with Aperture for as long as it works which I guess will be a good few years yet.

Absolutely agree.. I plan to stick w/ aperture for as long as possible.. In the meantime look for a migration path to different sw.

I was thinking of testing DarkTable, an open source alternative. If anybody who has used it could comment, that would be good. If LR goes full-on CC, I will be looking for an alternative.
 
As long as I can move the files out, I suppose I can live with this. Or leave everything where it is for now and use something new only for work going forward?

(Or just shoot film and do everything in the darkroom. Grumble grumble.)
 
I can very well imagine the panic of someone that has been storing the files as part of the Aperture library instead of using referenced files. Forget iPhoto for the same reason. Gives me chills just thinking about it. A lifetime of work wrapped up in a proprietary database that's about to be abandoned by the developer. When I used Aperture regularly, I always referenced files in my tried and true directory structure.

Who cares about directories? That is so IOS7...

The beauty of Aperture is that everything is just arranged as you want it, without even having to think about it, and without having to dick around in the OS. Projects, Albums, smart albums, etc. Aperture is just so much better for organising and managing your work.

There is no way any of my work is going anywhere near the cloud. Have learnt enough about the NSA this past year to steer well clear of that bag of hurt.
 
I don't really care much about apple. Adobe focuses on multimedia apps and don't venture out be build os.

I forgot the app name but I bought an unlimited version of a graphics app that later be acquired by Adobe to become Lightroom V1. That app was fantastic with my Olympus E-1 orf file in the old days. and was very simple to use, much easier than Lightroom v1.
