Noam Chomsky ... again!

My personal approach when I meet some "famous", is to find out what person he/she is, by talking a bit about everything in an relaxed and slightly "interested" way, to make them feel good. Typically, "important" people are normal folks who might have some particular personal obsession. It is finding out about that obsession that is fascinating. Personally, I would never ask a permission to take a photo of such a person "for the record" or, even worse, ask for a double selfie. This is an approach suggesting that you are in a state of inferiority, which I'm sure Raid, you are not. Instead, if that person is interesting, I'd demand a permission to MAKE A PORTRAIT, BECAUSE I AM A PHOTOGRAPHER.

The typical interview time is 20-30 minutes. It is no easy to just chat about life and still try to get some intersting views and perspectives about the world. I will take with me my Rolleflex 2.8D or the Tele model, and I will ask him for one portrait with window light.

Why not a time tested combo of your FF camera and a 50mm lens?

I already have a few snapshots from my April interview with him, so this time, I may want to go for one special portrait. Rolleiflex TLR with a handheld spotmeter. I have 12 frames to expose. One may have to do.

Ok, but 50mm lens doesn't have to mean snapshot. It's all in how you take it. That said, a Rollei should be very nice.

I like this, keep it simple.

It is clear that, while both the hyphenated and non-hyphenated forms of the word are commonly used; the hyphenated format is, by far, the more common and would appear to be the most accurate English spelling of the word. As the collation of data indicates, roughly 94% of reliable sources show hyphenation as the proper form; and even in the general population of web sources, 71% properly hyphenate the term.

Knock yourself out Gus. They don't call us "know-it-all intellectuals" for nothing. 🙂

We have a good level of intellect at RFF.
Political opinions are personal opinions and not facts.

A more applicable question in this thread could be : "I wonder whether Noam Chomsky will appreciate seeing me use a 1955 model 2.8D Rolleiflex TLR for a single portrait image of him" or not.

I recall the times when I was in college when I would take photos of some students who I did NOT like (with my father's Zeiss Contina on a tripod) on the campus of Baghdad University. These "disliked people" looked interesting in photos. I take photos not because I like these people. Iamy like them or I don't.

No, I never kept these images!

Forget politics: without Chomsky's work in computer science, none of you would be typing here. Just saying.

Have fun, Raid.

Hi Raid

There is no "just Raid" in our book. You are the one and only 🙂

A vote for the Rolleiflex if you think it will be accepted. A nice film square of your friend will be a gem for you.
Iphone images are convienent but lets all face it.... there is some magic missing in those little digital frames.

Best!

Glad to hear you're settling on the Rolleiflex! These days people -- even people like Chomsky who are used to being photographed and are old enough to remember a time when a Rolleiflex wasn't an oddity -- simply respond better to a TLR than any SLR, Rangefinder, mirrorless &c. They become both at ease and interested and that makes all the difference. Looking forward to seeing the pictures

liberal |ˈlɪb(ə)r(ə)l|
adjective
1 willing to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one's own; open to new ideas.
2 [ attrib. ] (of education) concerned with broadening a person's general knowledge and experience, rather than with technical or professional training. the provision of liberal adult education.
3 (especially of an interpretation of a law) broadly construed or understood; not strictly literal: they could have given the 1968 Act a more liberal interpretation.
4 given, used, or occurring in generous amounts: liberal amounts of wine had been consumed.
• (of a person) giving generously: Sam was too liberal with the wine.

etc...

ORIGIN Middle English: via Old French from Latin liberalis, from liber ‘free (man)’. The original sense was ‘suitable for a free man’, hence ‘suitable for a gentleman’ (one not tied to a trade), surviving in liberal arts. Another early sense ‘generous’ (compare with sense 4 of the adjective) gave rise to an obsolete meaning ‘free from restraint’, leading to sense 1 of the adjective (late 18th cent.).

For sure an interesting opportunity and a good photographic "exercise ". Now, about communication and interaction: Rolleiflex is ok but I would bring the 250 Land with an FP 3000iso film in it...a few window shot for him, a few for you...
Just my idea, robert

David: Could you enlighten us about these two "things"? 😀

They are/were philosophers who attempted to get a very powerful computer turned off in "The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Universe"... The joke being that they were there on behalf of a philosophers' union and so were behaving like trade unionists and philosophers. So making dogmatic demands but then undermining them by qualifying the demands. The computer out-smarted them.

Regards, David

PS FWIW, I hate explaining jokes...

We don't like these sorts of exchanges on RFF. It's a photgraphy forum not a politics forum.
Thank you for taking "it" elsewhere.

Just an observation here, but, on a different photography forum politics are simply not allowed. If that isn't a rule here, perhaps that should be evaluated.

Hi Corran

This thread is in the photography general interest forum.
The discussions are to be centered around Photography.
If a posted comment has nothing to do with photography in this forum it is not allowed.
If politics comes up during a photography discussion we try to leave it unless we are getting way off topic.
That is what has happened. I hope we can now leave it and discuss photography again.
We have an off topic forum this is not it.

Thanks
