Here are a couple photos, showing the difference between my Noctilux 50mm f1.2 and Zunow 5cm f1.1 with lens defect.
First photo is from the Zunow, wide open. Second photo it the Noctilux, wide open.

The Noctilux edges the Zunow it seems, but the Zunow is a little faster. I get the impression that the Noctilux 50/1.2 is also rare, but probably more common than a Zunow. There's a Noctilux 50/1.2 listed on eBay now for $9,999.00 which I think is more than Zunow's usually sell for although there's not a lot of data on this!

I just noticed there are two 50mm F1.1 Zunow's for sale on eBay right now -- around 5K each, one for Contax the other for LTM. The Contax one looks particularly interesting - insanely fast for a Contax lens. If I had a spare 5K I'd buy it (not likely any time soon!) .

... It's so hard not to fall under the spell of glass this exotic

Well, what about the new Voigtlander Nocton 50mm f/1.1? At $1,000 new wouldn't that make more sense than $5,000 for the Zunow?

Ten year old thread, oldie but goodie.

Zunow also made a ground breaking SLR in the late 1950s but it did not get off the ground with the just a bit later intro of the earth shattering Nikon F system.
