I had the opportunity to mount my Noctilux f1.0 to an A7r at the Photo Plus Expo and was blown away by the full frame, colors, and the focus peaking accuracy. After viewing many samples online with the Noctilux and A7/A7r, I am beginning to feel this camera is the ultimate body for this type of lens. With my rangefinder M8 I can get focus, but man, this Sony is superior and for the price and full frame, I feel it cannot be beat for use with the Noctilux. So all of you Noctilux owners here, are you seriously considering the Sony A7/ A7r as a primary camera for your lens? For me, this is the top reason for this camera, even if there are problems with some wide angle lenses!

I'd like to add this claim for lenses such as the 75mm f1.4 and 135mm f2.8 (and the 21mm Summilux)

DOF is so thin (relative in terms of how much one needs to recompose after focusing) for these lenses that using the RF's center patch does not provide adequate sharpness when placing close objects on the thirds. If I wanted to use my 21lux or 75lux and focus on an object to the side or corner of the frame wide open, a EVF with selectable magnification point is probably the only option.

I've found that magnification is really required for a 50mm lens at apertures wider than f/4 with the A7/A7R. But if you're able to deal with that, precision should be better than with a rangefinder, and there's no need to focus/recompose when focusing on something not within the patch.

I wish there was a magnification mode that showed a picture-in-picture window, the center the magnfied area, and the outer edges the edges of the frame. Would speed up the process. I believe Panasonic has this in some Micro Four Thirds cameras.

Picture in picture option brilliant!

Picture in picture option brilliant!

When I think of it the picture in picture option mentioned by jpfisher is simple and brilliant. We need to petition Sony, Leica, Fuji etc, to include this option in a firmware update. It would make a HUGE difference!

Don't credit me, Panasonic did it first. :D

Good luck with Leica. You can't even move the magnified spot on the M240.

Had it with Leica

Had it with Leica

Leica had priced themselves out if my budget. I am glad I have a Noctilux and other Leica lenses I was smart enough to buy used but these camera prices are becoming very unrealistic for technologies that change so rapidly. The Sony just makes too much sense at the right price point. I am finished with M digital bodies!

^ I never even started with them. Too unreliable. I have a Noctilux, 50 Summilux ASPH etc and have used a NEX-7 for almost a couple years. I will get a Sony full frame at some point but will wait for a while as there will be more models coming from them. I really like the NEX-7, it's bulletproof like a film Leica M.
