Noctilux pricing

Rayt, do you have any picture to show the differences? Most of the time, people say new coating can resist flare better, but I haven't heard that new coating will provide higher contrast.

I don't think the differences between the E58 and E60 versions came down to just coating. I understand (and I may be wrong so someone correct me so I don't go spreading internet rumours), that the E58 used Leitz's own 900403 glass type developed in its own lab. Later on this glass type was replaced by available glass from Schott.

First time that I hear this, very interesting !

The Noctilux feeding frenzy is in full bloom with no end in sight . If leica introduces a super fast non 50 mm lens this fall, I believe that the price of the noctilux will continue to rise unabated as the fastest and best lens of its kind. My advice for any fence sitters is to get one now because the price is not going to go anywhere but up. Since production of this lens has now stopped, future buyers will be forced to pay more for one of the finite number of Nocti that may become available.

Ken

PS : That is why I just parted with $5200 to get a mint one 3 weeks ago.

I just found that if you apply this formula to the price of oil it is directly proportional to the price of a used Noctilux in excellent condition.
(r is in gallons, not liters)
r2 - 2cr cos(theta - alpha) + c2 = a2

A Sigma lens is auctioned for 7399$ and has a MSRP of 8300$ here. Now imagine a guy saying "Wow, if this doesn't amply illustrate the problem with Sigma nowadays, I don't know what would. :("

And then another guy would come and argue his life about how a 400mm f2.8 + 2X converter is better and cheaper then a 80mm f5.6 and how Sigma will go bankrupt and blabla.

Childish, you might think, eh? Me too. So Kevin, please buy the lens or don't. The rest, your thoughts on the matter, are really unimportant. You are not a player in the Noctilux game (not as a buyer, not as a seller and not as a photographer) so what's your point???

Ned, I can't speak for Kevin, but I had a different reaction to his post than you.

When I read it I nodded in agreement, because I consider the "problem" with Leica as being the obsession with all things Leica - from either the supportive or damning perspective. And I thought a thread that has existed for a month just to report eBay sales prices as the perfect illustration of that problem.

Of course I understand your interpretation of Kevin's comment, and in hindsight, I think you may be closer to the intent. But I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth....

What I'm saying, Ned, is that much of the Leica world has little to nothing to do with photography, nowadays. And ticker-tape updates of Nocitlux prices falls right into that category, I'd say.

Perhaps one could somehow sync ebay auction prices into one's Blackberry, to trade when the market hits its peak? A photographer wouldn't want to sell his lens for $5,595 when he could get $5,640, would he?
