Hi morgan, I am trying to learn to be a better photographer and I would like for you to comment on the third image from the top. I am not criticising it, just need to know what you see. It is so confusing to me as to what is good and what is not so good.

principe azul said:Yes, I bought the vented and use it. Just like the aerodynamic look, and it was an expensive lens, so might as well go the whole hog. Without going back to find the standard hood, boxed away somewhere, I recall the vented hood moves slightly closer to the RF patch, but it has the big cutout, so overall it doesn't occlude as much as the standard hood. Helps that I've trained myself to focus with both eyes open unless the detail in the RF patch isn't that clear, so I'm just aware of it in the corner.
Not a night and day difference, though, between the hoods. But I'm used to vented hoods and knew what to expect.
quick question :: do u have a lens cap when you put on the vented hood?

I use a blower for the most part, but if needed, I use a micro-fibre cloth to wipe the filter (IR blocking, as it's on an M8). If not on a body, I store it face (hood) down in my bag.

Rafael said:Does anyone use the optional vented hood for this lens? I actually find the intrusion of the lens into the VF with the standard hood quite manageable. But you do certainly get more of the VF back when you take the lens hood off. I am wondering just how much difference there is between the intrusion of the standard and the vented hood. Anybody?
I have the vented version but it does block the viewfinder somewhat. I'm still not 100% convinced by this lens and the real reason is its size when shooting not its performance. I used a Noctilux for some years and find in some instances, the size of both lenses intrusive and not as discrete as the smaller 1.4 and summicrons. Sometimes i can just get more work done with smaller lenses, my subjects doesn't seem to notice and at the end of the day it's the getting the image that counts. For me anyway. YMMV.

Well, I like how the whole shot has a very casual feel to it, yet it captures something more than just an average shot. The way she's turned around, her expression (which isn't over the top, but vaguely wry), the cigarette. It doesn't hurt that she's attractive and dressed very well. What she's wearing contrasts nicely with the surroundings, which is evocative in its own right. My one criticism would be that that I wish the it was framed with her a bit more to the right, to show a bit more movement through the shot. But I just love the feel of this one.
