Hi i am considering buying a nokton 40mm 1.4 the seller has told me that the focus is stiff through part of its travel is this a major problem or is it something i could have repaired or mybe something i could live with or may it get worse if not seen to i would be gratefull for any advice.

stiff focus was reported on a few of the early 40/1.4 lenses and iirc it went away with use.
maybe do a search here and see, i am not 100% sure.

It is very easy to access the focus helical of the Nokton - just by taking the mount off.
So it should be straight forward to lube it, at your own risk of course.

The mechanics of the Nokton have changed, it now looks different than early versions.
If I were you I would wait until the next newer one comes up in the classifieds here
or on pnet.

Best,

Roland.

The part that alarms me is that the lens is stiff in only part of its travel. Mine was a bit stiff throughout when I got it new, but as Joe mentioned, they become smoother with time. A trip to the heat of Sri Lanka smoothed mine out. The fact the one being offered is only partially stiff suggests there could be a problem. They come up for sale pretty often, so sit tight for a bit.

The 40m 1.4 Nokton I had was quite smooth focusing on the R-D1, but extremely tight, both to mount and focus on the M8. I sold the R-D1 and 40 Nokton.
