the cl can handle the 40/1.4 so this should be ok.

This doesnt quite hold sound. Its true that the 40mm f1.4 is just within the limits of the CL. Because its wider than a 50 its focus acuracy with the 40mm f1.4 is about the same as a 50mm f2 which is the limit Leica states for this camera. Close up you will find problems with acuracy of the 50mm f1.5.

Size wise I find the lens too large for a CL or CLE. Will be good on your ZI though.

Joe you havent tried a CLE yet, thats something else to consider!

The DOF of the 50 @ f2 and 1m is 5cm.
The DOF of the 40 @ f1.4 and 1m is 5cm.
The DOF of the 50 @ f1.6 and 1m is 4cm.

joel, i had 2 cle bodies with 2 each of the 3 lenses made for it. one set i bought new and the other i found such a good deal i could not pass it up.
i sold all my 35mm gear and went into medium format for quite a few years and then sold the mf to get back into 35.
i loved the cle and figure that's why i like the cl as much as i do.
i would buy another cle but never seem to find a good enough deal when i have the ready cash.
