Nokton 50mm f/1.5

Hi all

I have been considering trading my Nokton 40mm for a Nokton 50mm. Are there any disadvantages in using this with the Bessa R2 ? Any problems with focussing? I like my 40mm a lot, but sometimes it is a bit too wide. And, I always use the 50mm framelines for composing my shots.

I dont think you will have any problems, although the bessa cameras are hardly ideal for focusing a fast lens like a 50 1.5 it can be done with a little extra care. I say go for it, its a great lens, and just be a little more careful with those wide open apertures and dof.

The performance of the 35,50,75 and 90 lenses are very well for the R2:D .

I have a R2 with the Heliar classic 50mm f2, awesome and beautiful couple but... I always carry with me this camera, after bought a Color Heliar 75mm and see the construction of this lens, I am considering now to buy the Nokton 50 f1.5, because all the old CV L-mount lenses are very well made.
I also have the Color Skopar 35mm PII and this lens and the Nokton 40mm are very similar made, I can't compare the quality of the new lenses with the L-Mount ones.

Maybe is not the specific answer for your question, but I think can be help.;)
 
I used a Nokton 50mm on an R2 very happily for quite a while. The 50 is quite a bit bulkier than the 40, but it's a great optic. Can't say I ever had any issues with focusing, although the 50mm/1.5 is likely at the limit of what an R2 can manage.
 
The 50 is quite bulky. Unless I need the speed, I usually carry an FSU lens on my R2, so mine doesn't get out much.
I have a hankering for a 40. Swap in mind?
 
I wouldn't swap if I were you. The 40 is half stop faster (1.4 vs 1.6), has
.7m minimum focus (vs .9) and is much smaller. It is also better built, IMO.

ferider: I don't mind the half stop. It's the minimum focus of the 50mm that worries me.

The minimum focusing distance is a big factor for me too. I like to get in close so I must have .7 meters. That rules out some nice lenses such as the 50 Nokton. I'm glad the Zeiss 50/2 Planar can get to .7 meters so it will probably be my next lens. I have a Canon 50/1.4 LTM which renders very nicely but can only close focus to 1 meter and I find myself leaving it at home a bit more because of that. Just my thoughts.
 
Yeah, minimum focus is one of the reason I didnt get the nokton and instead got the zeiss planar. I have never regretted it, I shoot use the extra .2 meters of distance more then I would have expected

Though I have 0.9m closest focusing on my R2, I haven't felt it hindering me in any way. I am really tempted to get the Nokton 50mm now. Unless, there is something else better out there in a similar price range. :)
 
Naruto, go for the Nokton 50/1.5, it's an excellent performer (imho, better than the Planar or the current Summicron, if you like the modern redering). You won't regret it.
 
If the Planar is too expensive, there is also the M-Hexanon 50/2. A beautiful
lens with .7m min focus. I got mine here on RFF for US 350. Just as good
optically as the planar, and the newest Summicrons, IMO.

It really boils down to min. focus vs the additional half stop of the Nokton
(it says it is f1.5 but really is f1.6).

Downsides of the Nokton are: big, not too sharp wide open, DOF wide open
at min. focus is the same as DOF of an f2 lens at .7m. Also, I personally have
seen two Noktons that wobbled after a while - built quality is worse
than with your 40.

I use min. focus of a 50mm lens for close-up, frame-filling portraits.

Only you know if you need this.

Roland, 350USD for the M-Hexanon is a steal !!! I must watch out for such deals.

There isnt, I dont think you will be disappointed. In my opinion its the best buy for the high speed 50's, just remember to get a good adapter, like the voigtlander ones
 
On the contrary, I am trying to go with wider lens for RF cameras.

Naruto, how's your fight with Orochimaru? :D

Me too.

At times I also like that the ZM goes all the way down to F22. Don't use it at that aperature too often, but a couple times I could without having to dig out the ND filter.
 
Hi guys

thanks for the comments.

I will be switching to the 50mm, but on hold/looking out for a Hexanon 50mm too. If I get a good deal on the Hex, will surely get it. Else, it's the Nokton 50mm. :)
