Nokton and Ultron for first lenses (M8)

and do bother me a bit, but a summilux 35 wasn't in the OP's options (or in my kit last week, it was raining), and the CV 35/1.4 can have similar uh, signatures... so I thought I'd stick with facts and reproducible objective results.

Show me a Leica Lens I can get for 320e + the Sigma I do not need and I buy it in an instant. I will get my M8 tomorrow (after a year of saving) and these will be my first lenses. I will then start to save for a 35mm Leica, but I am not swimming in money, so it takes time. 😉

The 40mm is modified so it brings up the 35mm framing lines. I am also a sucker for shallow depth of field, so I will probably shoot the lenses wide open most of the time.

Take a look at the M-Mount flickr group here
You can view many shots taken with different M-mount lenses by different photographers under differing conditions.

Short of trying them yourself I think it's a good way of getting an idea of a lenses character.

Yes do check out Sean Reid's site if you'd like some nice reviews of lenses. Unless he has changed his views on this (I'm no longer a subscriber, so I am a little out of touch) he has long been a proponent of CV lenses - as well as Zeiss lenses. It was Sean's reviews that led me to try out several different CV lenses.

Just don't get caught up in the Leica hype. Again. I'm not saying the lenses aren't better. For the most part, they are. How much better is the question. And how much is it worth to get that little bit extra?
(I just sold a 28 summicron and replaced it with a CV28/1.9 ultron after answering that very question for myself.)

One of the greatest things about that M8 is that you have access to a wide range of RF lenses, both new and old, made by a lot of different companies. Enjoy.

Yeah, they probably changed the optical formula during production to get rid of it...not. Do you seriously believe that such a thing as correction for spherical aberration would be subject to sample variation? That's very naive, in my opinion.
 
I have the Nokton Classic 35/1.4 and the Nokton 50/1.5 screw mount. Use them both on my M9. The 50/1.5 is a great lens. Super sharp wide open and does a pretty nice bokeh too. Go to SteveHuffPhoto.com. There are reviews of both the 35/1.4 and the 50/1.5. The samples of the 50/1.5 actually look comparable to the 50 Lux.

The 35/1.4 (multi coated) is a little softer than the 50/1.5, but it's still very nice wide open. Definitely has a more classic view ... dreamy look. Both lenses are a great value. If I could afford Leica lenses (after having spent way too much on the M9 already), I'd buy all Leica lenses. But alas, I don't mind the fact that I'm spending about 20% of the cost of a Leica lens for probably 80-90% of Leica lens performance.
