NOLAroids -- My 195 went on a road trip

Thanks all for the continued positive comments. I've been floored by all the support!

Unfortunately there is no 100/400 iso B&W to use outside in bright sun. I'll try with a red filter to reduce the amount of light...maybe.

I got my 195 just as the FP100B was being discontinued. However, I didn't realize how nice it would be to have until the price sky-rocketed or I would have stocked up. Right now it's about $40/pack on eBay :bang:. I was planning to just use the FP3000B with one or two 3-stop ND filters if I wanted to shoot during the day. Although I'm finding that film is so sensitive that it is nearly impossible to eliminate microscopic light leaks in bright sun.

You are freaking crazy for stopping right there on the interstate. That is a pretty common place for accidents (I-10 east).

I didn't know any better when we stopped, but it sure felt dangerous! We did see two small gators. One was maybe 4ft and the other was about 3ft. Just little guys.

How did you meter?

I have a little Sekonic and I sometimes use an iPhone app.

Also - what did you do with the peeled shots to keep them safe once you peeled them? I never seem to have enough hands and end up in a bit of a muddle, especially if I'm shooting in a busy place.

Cheers

I have not found a good solution when shooting solo yet. You can wait to pull them until you get home as the Fuji film self terminates, but that's no fun! Here are some options I found while searching:

I've also seen one box like the above with springs along either side... you can just slide in a photo and the springs grab the borders without marring the surface.

Luckily I had two other people with me on this trip so each of them could hold about 4, which was more than enough until we got to the car and laid them out in the trunk to dry. Even though it felt like we were shooting constantly, we only went through 5 packs in 3 days -- 50 pictures! It slows you down, that's for sure.

This was a great post. Love the photos, especially of the models, and a great read. Makes me miss Louisiana.

Not surprisingly, the shot of the models has the most views in the gallery :D

And by the way, I can't take credit for all of these shots. I feel like I definitely got some nice ones (accordionist, the models, etc...), but my friend Ian Curcio took quite a few of them as well. Here is his site if anyone would like to see more of his work:

Harry, I like the series and value the comments you've made about it. I wouldn't have seen this had you not posted in that thread about placing limits on gallery posting. I'm glad to have not missed this. If there are folks in that thread who implied that they don't want to see a series, I think (a) they probably don't really mean what they wrote and (b) they can always move on to something else. So, don't be stymied by that debate; keep posting!

fun-well done and the images tell a great story... that polaroid would be a very fun camera to play with this summer

I'm glad too for the extended story. The best shots are very very very good and quite distinctive, given the neglected format and the skill you deploy.

Excellent series of photos. Did you give any prints to your portrait subjects? I enjoy doing that but I need to learn to take two shots so I can keep one for myself. Keep shooting and hopefully Fuji will keep making film.

Agreed on the need to keep shooting! I really hope Fuji keeps up production.

And yes, most of the portraits of strangers were shot twice -- one for me, one for them.

Harry, nice to see your photos again as a series after having seen them in the gallery. And you write well.

Cheers,

I really enjoyed shooting this series last year so I thought I would create a quick site for the follow-up trip last weekend. Here is a link to the full post with 30+ pictures, but I'm also including a handful here to whet your appetite. Please enjoy and I would love any feedback you have!

Love this shot, but nearly all my pictures darkened by a good 2/3rds to a full stop by a day or two after pulling them.

A great story and beautiful photos. I like that lonely kite surfer! I had never thought to take a land camera for a journey but you push me to try it (even if I'm not so skilled as you are). I still have a few FP3000B...
robert
PS: also the off camera flash photos are excellent...

Thanks Robert! Here is the kite surfer photo you mentioned (taken out of a moving vehicle speeding along the coast at about 50 mph). I also included a shot of my buddy sitting on a boardwalk in the swamps. I love the leading lines!

I'm trying to upload these 2 photos to the gallery, but the system is giving me slack as it hasn't been 24 hours since the 5 I already posted for this thread
