Norwich Cathedral Photos

I'm not in the slightest bit religious, but I like cathedrals. They're nice places to walk around and good places to get some photos. So I realised that it was slightly odd that during 13 years of living 15 minutes from Norwich Cathedral, reputed to be one of Britain's finest Norman buildings, that I'd never been there. Luckily, the purchase of a Canonet G-III QL17 provided the perfect excuse to rectify this situation. Attached are the best pictures from the roll of HP5 @ 400. I'm not sure whether these could use more contrast or made a bit darker. Generally, your opinions!

Very nice! You've shown, as others have before, why so many like the Canonet G-III QL17 (not to take anything away from your photographic skills, of course).

Thanks folks. It really is a spectacular little camera. I'm going to wetprint a few of these to see how good that lens really is. @VictorM: 1965 is a while back, although apart from the addition of a gift shop I doubt much has changed. What did you think of the place?

I seem to remember they were collecting donations to reinforce/restore the structure. The bell tower was leaning at an alarming angle! Norwich, at the time, was a nice small city with lots of very old buildings and churches.

Hey....I've been there once! All the way from western NC.

Used to date a girl from Essex (she was no Essex girl, trust me) that lives here. We went over in March of 2000 and she had a cousin attending art school up there, so we used the last available travel day of our Brit-rail passes to pay her cousin a visit & while there we checked out the cathederal. Norwich was a very pleasing little city & I wished I could have spent more time there.

I even took pics with a p/s 35 I had at the time, but I've never had those pictures scanned. Maybe I can get one or two done for the sake of this thread.

Not a bad shot there Pab. I got one from a similar angle in the cloisters.
Norwich is still a fairly small city and the medieval parts are still beautiful. There's a couple of rather depressing shopping centres (although both miles better than anything I've seen in other cities) but overall it's quite good. The only downside is that everywhere around is flat as a pancake. And I like mountains.

Owen, it's all your fault!:>) I saw your post, loked the pix so much that I've gone and bought myself a G-III QL17. There was/is quite a choice on Ebay, so hope I picked a gudn, as we say in Norfolk.

I think the soft light and the soft contrast work well together.

I also think I need to give my QL17 G-III a more thorough evaluation. I was a bit disappointed with my copy after the first photos. Or perhaps my eyes & brain are at fault. Most likely the later is true.

Your 3rd shot is spectacular, point of view, exposure, and you have wonderful dark,medium and light tones. Great little camera and great photography. Your 4th and 5th shots I also like very much. I have one of these gems and want to try B&W with it soon. Hope mine turn out half as well.🙂

I share your interest in cathedrals. I studied for a year at U of York, and spent many happy hours admiring York Minster (this was before the fire a number of years ago). Your photos of Norwith Cathedral are excellent. I like the way you've honed in on details, and not tried to cram too much into each shot. The first and third shots I particularly like, and I also think these show off the lens on the QL17 to good advantage too. These are great little cameras, aren't they? I have not used b&w in mine yet, but your shots may inspire me to do so. I really like the warm tones I get w/ the lens w/ color film (particularly 400 UC and Portra 160NC).
