Not sure I'll grow to like 35mm

Of course I didn't suggest to share images as "evidence" that one's subjective opinion is better than someone else's. But rather than simply stating a preference for any focal lenght because it enables this or that, it woud be nice to see some images where the given focal lenght is uses as described.

Example: if I'm to make a case for using a 28mm with good close focus capabilities as an occasional portrait lens, I may share this (Ricoh GR1) portrait of a Russian farmer that I took some years ago. It may show that even though most would consider the wide angle perspective unflattering, it can very well be used with acceptable results.

Edit: Or this other "portrait", also 28mm from close distance.

When I purchased my first 35mm SLR, the 50mm lens was the first lens I used on it. I loved the 50mm focal length when shooting live theatre. I usually flanked the 50mm f/1.4 with the 105mm f/2.5 and the 28mm f/2.8. However, for general subjects, 50mm was too telephoto for my taste.

Over time, I tried 28mm, 35mm, 40mm, 45mm 50mm and 55mm focal lengths lenses as my most used lens for general subjects. All of them worked. However, my personal favorite was the 35mm (f/1.4).

On my Nikon 35mm SLRs, I flanked the 35mm f/1.4 with the 85mm f/1.4 and the 24mm f/2.
On my Leica M6 and M10 rangefinders, I flanked the 35mm f/1.4 with the 90mm f/2 and the 21mm f/1.4.

I'll prefer a 35 over a 50 any day of the week.

A 35mm on a Leica is my standard set-up. To me a 50 is a short telephoto.

I really like 24mm.

This sums it up for me! 24mm and 35mm I find to be somehow the "Natural Vision" focal lengths. They just work for me.

With M-mount it's 15, 28, and 50
With (d)SLR I prefer 50, 85, and 105
and strangely with the IIIf it's 28, 50, and 135

I do have one 35mm lens but it feels way to round for interesting photos...

\back in 1981 I had two lenses as I started on my photography journey, a 50mm and a 28mm, I have always favoured the 28mm with its 74 degrees of view, saying that once I got into rangefinders a 35mm came into the stable. At the end of the day with time you will find what suits you best, (well partly, until the next bout of GAS hits).🙂
