Nothing prepared me for New York

Well l still have not got over new York, the sensory overload will stay with me for ever, its a photographers paradise, an amazing city. Storm Ezekiel blew in, however l still managed to get a few good shots, my mobile phone also died on the second day which meant had to rely on the wife's phone but hey ho what a trip.

Back in the mid-80's I was working as a machinist in a shop that had a couple guys from NY working there too. When I told them I was going to Rhode Island for a wedding and would be going to NYC too, they all said to 'Bring your gun'.
My most lasting memory of that trip was taking the express subway up town to the Met. It rivaled any of Disneyland's E ticket rides at the time.

NYC is Disneyland for adults. I am glad that I am only about 1.5 hours away and can visit for fun a few times each year, either for a long day trip or for a weekend. I think living there would become a love/hate thing after about 6 months, even if I could afford a decent apartment.

Mike, I was only thinking about you the other day and wonder how you got on in NY. So glad you enjoyed it. I did some years back and found the people very friendly though I know it gats a bad rap. I would definitely go again if I could though there’s so many places yet to visit. I did Chicago this year.

I found the subway fascinating, confusing , a whole bag of stimulatory things, near Harlem I got into a great conversation with a bunch of heavily tattooed locals, tattoo being a common talking ground, we took off our tops to compare my English tattoos and their Ed Harley style American tattoos.

I’m sorry I missed you, Mike. I would have been happy to meet up for coffee but I didn’t realize you were here until you had already gone.

I’m glad you had a good time and got some good shooting in. I’ve spent a lifetime here and I still haven’t run out of things to photograph. No matter how much time you allot to a trip to NYC, it’s never quite enough to do and see all you want to.

Garry Winnogran shot around midtown a lot in his early career. Mostly between Macy's on 34th to 59th Street. He found an entire universe there.

"Billionair's Row" is 57th Street. You will see mucho tall skinny buildings that form a tall skyline. The Condos are either entire floors with 360 degreee views or two or even three entire floors with 360 degree views.

Another expensive location where the wealthy have built "bunkers" in in the lower 70's near Fifth Avenue. There are entire blocks that are only occupied by their respective owners for 3 months a year. For the UBER weathly they use LLC's to disguise ownership so property cannot be confiscated. Many are Russian Oliarchs and wealthy Asians.

Basically 90 day visas are exploited to avoid paying taxes, and these people are wealthy enough to live in 4 different countries to avoid paying taxes. The rich say, "No one ever got rich by paying taxes."

Jeff Bezos bought an apartment near the Flat Iron Building; it has been reported that his kitchen is on one block, and his bedroom on another.

Meanwhile I live in a 650 square foot apartment with a fashion blogger in Madhattan. You could be in the top 10% and still not be wealthy enough to own an apartment.

I find a smaller city with less activity better for street work...but glad you enjoyed it, definitely no lack of subjects, it's just overload to me when I went there.
