Pro-Mone,
That wasn't one of the smartest things we did. LOL. I remember you were concerned about me getting heat exhaustion, when it was you who was dying.
Also know that I took John through worse. During the Great Recession all the places to get water were closed and the only water available was from Newtown Creek, LOL.
Cal
Haha yeah I started off being concerned about you and at the end was wondering how the heck are you still on your feet much less still wanting to shoot. Good times

I was at my best weight during this time too though... I need more death marches.

Errrrhhh, they did have the 50mm Asph Apo Summicron, which I did get them to let me mount on my MM and fire off a few shots.....
LOL , I though this might come up
But how is the 50APO 'cron in reality? How do the raw files look?
Is it another step like seeing the MM files for the first time or is it just that incremental inching towards the bleedin' cuttin' edge that you can only see in controlled setting (tripod, cable release, holding your breath)? What's you personal judgement on this lens?

Pro-Mone,
In bike racing, both road and mountain bike, its all about approaching the limits of prolonged anerobic threshold for prolonged periods of time or physical exhertion that is barely sustainable.
My friend Eric, another racer, once said, "Pain is just another feeling." This is what racing is about: its about knowing yourself and pushing yourself right up against that edge. If you are not at that edge you are not really racing.
My friend "Zingo" who was a Vietnam era Navy SEAL once asked me if I ever was in the military (never was), and when I inquired why he was asking he said, "You have the right sized body and the right personality."
I inquired for more details and he told me the bigger more muscular guys have a hard time with the stamina required. Their bigger bodies work against them he explained.

Klaus,
Good question, but I think 1/4000 or 1/2000 of a second can work in lew of a tripod, and probably not for most people as most people do not necessarily like both emulating medium format and printing huge where the added resolution will count, otherwise the resolution is wasted.
I've not printed big enough yet to see where I would need that extra detail and resolution, but it does seem that the MM is the camera that effectively competes against my 120 cameras. Perhaps the 50 Cron APO is just another step.
I want to see how good a 20x30 is from say a 28 Cron ASPH or 50 Lux ASPH shot at a high shutter speed first. Until then the 50 APO is moot.

Klaus,
Zingo was a bad ass. He did some evil stuff back in the day.
BTW he was also a horn player, and he got his knickname one day on a gig. It seems that the guitar player reversed a ground on his amp and Zingo got 120 volts through his face when his horn came into contact with a mike.

Klaus, I don't think I have spent enough time with the 50 AA Cron to render an even halfway decent opinion. From the superficial stuff -- I like the way the lens felt -- well constructed, nice weight, the built-in hood is really cool to use. But the real stuff -- IQ and resolution, you can truly assess only if you spend a day with it and then enlarge the images, as Cal pointed out. My few shots taken indoor at the Javits center show good contrast, but that's about it. At $7,350, it is an awfully expensive piece of glass that cost even more than the Typ 240! If money is no object, I'd buy it. But in my case, it's guns or butter as it was taught in my Principles of Economics class.

Cal,
I can't believe you ran the marathon without training for it! Two of my 3 daughters have run the half-marathon. My youngest daughter, who you will meet on Sunday, ran the half-marathon in Bellevue, Washington a couple of years ago. I was told she would probably finish the race at a certain time. I was having a cup of coffee at a shop in downtown Bellevue and was not near the finish area when I received a call that she actually finished far ahead of her anticipated time. I had to run down to the finish line to congratulate her!
She is definitely going down to see the New York City marathon but I will likely pass due to suffering from big-time jet lag on Sunday morning. I will be very tired as I am being picked up tomorrow morning at 4:15 AM for a 6:25 AM flight.
As for myself, I ran a 5K race in my 40's in about 30 minutes but I don't run anymore. I do use the cardio equipment regularly at the gym instead.

If you like the MM, check out the Phase One Achromatic+, a 39 megapixel medium format digital camera back that provides wide spectrum black and white images. They claim that it is the first commercially available medium format back that is a true replacement for almost all scientific black and white film types at much higher quality and with far more consistency. Also, they claim that it approaches 4"x5".
The Achromatic+ back is suppose to be designed to be a black and white only product with no color filters on the sensor.
Course then you don't get butter, guns, housing, any food, or almost anything else for a few years.
