Great to see the group again, today.

In case you missed it, Erwin Puts posted the following on Facebook:

"My first tests show that the Leica Monochrome and the M7 loaded with D100 developed in Spur HRX-3 both resolve about 70 line pairs per mm. The digital files show a cleaner image and a better edge contrast, but basically the differences are small and the Ilford negatives have more depth and the grain is giving it a more real effect. More to come.

It is thought provoking that the differences between film and digital are quite small, even today with high-quality digital equipment. Of course the D100 is Iso 64 and the Monochrome is ISO 320, but film is still competitive."

I like the Phase One APO, but I don't like the price. Also know that if I want to get large format like results I could do some stitched panoramas using my Monochrom. This Brezener technic is very impressive. The examples I saw were done on a Nikon D-800 using a Noct-Nikkor for the shallow DOF. While the Noct-Nikkor does not have the light fall-off of a Noctilux, it does not have the corner sharpness of the Noctilux which vignettes. Perhaps the smooth OOF could be made with my version 1 50 Rigid, but maybey my 50 Lux ASPH is the better lens.

It all can get crazy, but crazy is good IMHO. LOL.

I can't believe you ran the marathon without training for it! Two of my 3 daughters have run the half-marathon. My youngest daughter, who you will meet on Sunday, ran the half-marathon in Bellevue, Washington a couple of years ago. I was told she would probably finish the race at a certain time. I was having a cup of coffee at a shop in downtown Bellevue and was not near the finish area when I received a call that she actually finished far ahead of her anticipated time. I had to run down to the finish line to congratulate her!

She is definitely going down to see the New York City marathon but I will likely pass due to suffering from big-time jet lag on Sunday morning. I will be very tired as I am being picked up tomorrow morning at 4:15 AM for a 6:25 AM flight.

As for myself, I ran a 5K race in my 40's in about 30 minutes but I don't run anymore. I do use the cardio equipment regularly at the gym instead.

I should put it this way. It's more fun to shoot Noct-Nikkor on a film body. Now my d600 feels like c#$p after using an F5 :bang:

Edit: Yeah, most automatic cameras feel like garbage when compared side-by-side with an F5.

If I had a Noct-Nikkor I would be shooting with it at all hours of the night, shooting handheld at ISO 6400 on my D3.
I'll have to settle for a 50mm f/1.2 AiS instead and deal with the field curvature and coma. Maybe one day I'll get me a Noct though. But they cost the same as my 1972 Mercedes did, and it's in fantastic condition with low mileage!

Oh, I found a great apartment in Philly and I move in January 15th.
I'll be in Jersey City the last half of December through the first week in January, bunny-sitting in both Jersey and Manhattan.

Keep your fingers crossed for me in my job application with the VA for a position that I am very qualified for!

2014 is going to be good.

Phil,

Always keep us in the loop. Really great to hear good news. I was telling Tung about how you cut down a Canon split prism screen for your D3 and how the DK-17 makes the VF'er better.

On my F3P I had it rigged with a Beattie Intenscreen and a DK-17. Because of magnification from the lens (58mm) the Noct-Nikkor gave an eye-poping bright 100% view.

Good Luck Phil, Guy's I took the First step in fixing my F3 I got, I took apart the junker
F3 part of the $30.00 dollar pair I got and know how to fix the auto indexing ring on the
lens mount, There's a thread, two pulleys and a gear pulley, just got to tighten the gear
pulley up and that should do it.

ago my Father was stationed in Oregon, before he was shipped off to the
Pacific for WWII, and in Oregon he meat a girl there. He used to always
bring her up, I think he just wanted to bug my Mom.

The rumors of the new DF Nikon have me intrigued but I'm wondering what we'll be sacrificing in usability or modularity in that camera. It looks like a camera I may love to have but only if it has the ability to fully match the manual shooting ability of my D3. The DK-17m is a must-have on any Nikon SLR that can fit it, I think. That and the ability to change focusing screens.

The tooth of the groundglass grit in Nikon's focusing screens hasn't been very coarse since they introduced the F4 and moved to the pedestrian f/2.8 aperture in their pro lens line.

A coarse groundglass is much easier to focus fast, it's just not as bright as the modern screens. One can't see the true focusing point as easily with fine grit screens as well. It's because zoom lenses dominate.

Back in the F/F2/F3 days Nikon had the most extensive selection of focusing screens with varying levels of grit and a full array of focusing/composition aids. We've lost that functionality in modern cameras even though photographers are still taking the same photos and still need that ability.

I guess autofocus has become the norm even though even with Nikon's most advanced focusing algorithm, it still isn't as accurate as a human eyeball and a split-prism. With my hacked coarse grit canon EOS 1v screen in the D3 I can shoot sports with a 300mm f/4.5 AiS lens, no problem. The image just snaps and I know it's in focus.

I may be wed to the D3 for quite some time for all this functionality. In that camera, Nikon brought together all the great functions of a full-frame D2x, added a better color meter and overlooked the fact that with the full-frame interchangeable screens, the user could put anything that fit in there and make it work great.

All that said, I'd love to play with the DF when it comes out.

Oh yeah, one of those sports shots got me hired by the local paper. It's not much per-shot but it's paid publication!
