The TED Mid-Atlantic was a life changing experience. I seem transformed, and the world seems very different today. I reached a lot of understanding, my whole life, and the entire world has been re-framed.
It was kind of a spiritual experience where great truth came to light and revealed a greater understanding.
I feel the sense of apathy and low level chronic despair that is in our news, media and politics removed displaced by great hope. The wisdom of the 33 speakers really changed the way I think.
The Way TED Talks work they really created a community at the event. During breaks you did not have to leave the venue, and food was supplied. Then there was this party/reception where a special kind of openess happens from all the inspiration.
The divisiveness that recently has been created vanished, and there really was a sharing that I wish existed in the bigger world. I kinda found myself rather transformed.
Of the 33 speakers ("Maggie" was one of them) I met with 10 of them either in the Green Room, during the breaks, lunch, or at the reception. Many people came to me because of my association with Maggie.
Anyways I'm still a bit overwhelmed and can only describe the experience as rapture. Too many things that are great happened to report, and all I can say a great amount happened.
Oddly I found myself tearing in the audience and sobbing. A great amount of joy and hope filled an emptiness inside me. BTW I was not the only person in the audience that reacted in this way.
Lately since Seattle there has been a development of "Tribes" in my life. Maggie and I have a Tribe in Seattle who want us to move and live there. We have a tribe at TED-X, and it seems we are being invited to Baltimore to establish yet another.
I can see many possibilities converging... Something big is happening...

Congratulations !
This sound a lot like my workshop experience, at least the impact it had on your perspectives in general, although in this case not on photography.

Klaus,
I'll be joining the TEDx forum/network.
Also I'm following your lead and registered for a workshop to further myself photographically. I'm booked for the first weekend in December.
My 2x3 inch business cards that are Piezography prints are really helping me display that I'm not only a photographer, but also a printer. They also represent a sample of my work.
I'm not sure what is happening, but there seems to be some kind of momentum that is taking place. Perhaps it started in Seattle on my vacation where we penetrated a creative inner circle and now have a rather large tribe in Seattle that not only wants us back, but to relocate there. It seems like "Maggie" and I will be attending some event in the spring in Seattle. Also a friend from Seattle already came to New York to meet-up.
Now we know people in Baltimore, and we are part of a TEDx Clan. Know that out of the TEDx branches, I was told the Mid-Atlantic Chapter is considered the strongest and best. Being part of this community is a big deal. I am becoming widely known as a photographer and not just some odd funny guy with a ponytail.

Pro-Mone,
Thanks for the clarity.
Seems that there is a spillover from the world of fashion. LOL.
Yesterday and this morning I thought I was coming home after work to get some cameras to shoot in Fort Green tonight at the Brooklyn Accelerator, but as I'm heading out the door to work, Maggie reads an e-mail that it has been rescheduled for Thursday which is another event, a book signing party of a friend.
So now I don't know if it will be this Friday or the up and coming Monday.
I hate all this last minute chaos, but lately I'm part of the problem.
TEDx was/is a great event. Seems like I'm getting swept into yet another world and another community.

Hi NYC group,
Unfortunately I'm traveling from Friday and won't be able to make yet another meetup. Hopefully the December one (fingers crossed!).
PS - Sorry I'll miss you during this visit, John!

Anyone who knows me, knows I have great luck.
I'll be sporting a 7 1/4 pound baby Linhof Tech IV from 1958 that is almost 60 years old that is "Monstered" out (loaded with accessories) that buy further luck had the lens separation repaired for "no money" ($250.00). Basically I got this entire rig for "no money" because the seller was very up front about the lens separation, and the BIN was only $800.00. So now the Zeiss 100/2.8 Planar alone is worth about $2K.
From Photoville, I kinda "collected" a year's supply of lens cleaning sham-E's from the Duggal booth. I also got a chance and spun the wheel of fourtue at the Duggal booth and won a 16x20 Vibrachrom print with brace for the cost of $99.00 (in store purchase only. This coupon I was awarded expires 12/31/17 and I really don't have the cash flow to hose them (Duggal) for a pretty good deal. This offer is worth over $300.00, so basically if you want a print worth over $300.00 for $99.00 I will gift you this coupon.
A Vibrachrome print is a dye sublimation onto a metal panel that has a structural support added that displays the panel floating proud of the wall. Also know the contrast and level of saturation to me seems rather enhanced, so perhaps this dye sublimation Vibrachrome best suits only images that would benefit from said high contrast and saturation.
Let me know who wants it. Also to avoid being last minute first person who wants it gets it. Just trying to change the world. LOL.

out around the Fuji booth and Canon and zipping up and down the aisle's passing
thru Nikon and a few other's. It was a good show you could tell the Canon, Nikon,
Sony, Fuji and Olympus had the biggest booth's.

Bob,
I was in D.C. at TEDx Mid-Atlantic for "Maggie's" TED Talk.
I understand that Leica did not have a booth this year. Pretty much they made the most of Photoville and ran their own private events during PhotoPlusExpo exploiting the Leica Store in SoHo.
I'm O.K. with missing PPE. Last month I was part of a focus group and I already got a lot of smut about new cameras and technology. Pretty much got inside info I can't talk about, but I have a very concise view of the future and confidential information. Pretty much an honor to have been selected and chosen.

Philippe,
The Meet-Up is Saturday and not Friday.
I'll remember to bring the set of 5 filters to gift you for your Pen-F.
I think I would like to check the 1/1000 on my M6. Pretty sure that being a mechanical shutter and the extensive use it has seem in almost a decade of my use the highest speed is likely longer. Perhaps it needs service for a speed adjustment. Maybe 1/500 could be still good, but 1/1000 on my M6 likely overexposes. If so I would like to know by how much.
I will be bringing this Nikor sheet film tank to show Baron. This tank is adjustable and can handle 12 sheets and is adjustable in format and can handle 2x3 through 4x5. I bought mine for $100.00 and this is a great price. Also not so common and available on EBAY.
I have a coupon from Duggal to give to someone for that Vibrachrome print I mentioned.
Also expecting an update from Steve on the roll of Kodak 5222 I gave him.
Tonight is that book signing somewhere on 5th Avenue I believe in the Flatiron District, in some retail store. We can only afford an hour there because we also got an invite to a private party/opening/preview to the last exhibition of the year at Milk Studios. Evidently "Maggie" is friends with a founder of Milk Studios and their relationship is leading to some future collaboration.
The big draw will be seeing John. Of course I'll be bringing a baby Linhof that is fully monsterized to annoy him LOL. Don't forget that I'll be bringing some Fuji FP-100 from my stash along with a Polaroid back for some fun. This 7 1/4 pound camera should offend John. LOL. Why does he love me? LOL.

Cal,
The device I use is described here: http://www.photoplug.de/
Officially it is accurate up to 1/500. I tested my 3 Leicas (M2, M4 and M6) at 1/1000 and they came in between 1/500 and 1/750. The M2 that was serviced by DAG measured 1/700.
In general I found that all my cameras were accurate at 1/60 , off by 1/3 at 1/125 and off by up to 2/3 at 1/250 and 1/500. This validated what I already surmised from experience but its very useful to eliminate one element of uncertainty.

Back in the day I was once a performance artist, and to live in the moment experiences were shared and processed in the collaborative I was a member of. This shared growth was required because theater is a collaborative medium. Of course this involves a lot of vulnerability and required a safe place and was not the real world. On the other hand photography is a more solitary art medium, anyways it is the way I do it.
Although I am widely known, know that I am deep inside I am a loner. Kinda funny how I try to "mind my own business," yet somehow I got manipulated into being responsible for this NYC Meet-Up that this month will be going on for eight straight years, even though I'm a self-proclaimed "lazy-slacker." Initially I did not want to be burdened by the responsibility, but now looking back on all this Damaso Reyes, who started this Meet-Up, made a wise choice. Like I said, "I was only trying to mind my own business."
So the persona I present here is greatly exaggerated. In real life I may be kind of a funny and amusing person, but I'm not really that loud. I kinda realize that somehow over the years that RFF has allowed me to embed myself and that really I have an embedded blog within this forum, and somehow my off topic rants are tolerated. I do not text, I don't Face-Book, I don't Instagram, I don't post photo's; and all this seems to annoy people, yet when I blog here it is not only tolerated, but perhaps encouraged. LOL.
So I want to share with you what happened to me at TEDx Mid-Atlantic. First off this was a life changing event for me that gave me knowledge, shared experience, and a new understanding; and I realized there were gaps that got filled that in a cathartic sense in a spiritual way made me whole. I gained great insight to not only the world, but also myself and my place in the world as a photographer.
I brought a stash of 2x3 inch business cards that was a folio of about 32 different images. The content is so that these small images allow someone see a body of work, and the extremely small size was not really a liability, but an advantage. Vicariously through Maggie (Lyn=real name), a presenter at TEDx, and because of my association, I in turn was presented as a photographer, and having this folio was a way of putting out my work.
As you know one of my rants is how the work I do for Maggie's blog gets lifted, stolen, and used. Perhaps I only get photo credits 20% of the time, and other times I get credit for another photographer's work (BBC), told I would be given photo credits-but not (NBC World News Tonight), or have my simple three letter last name misspelled by an online magazine. Most recently I had a shot published in Vogue Italia with no photo credits and if it were not for all my ranting you would not know that I took the shot. Where is respect? You would think the BBC and NBC has to have some integrity...
So like when I was a performance artist, putting yourself out there has its consequences and risks; and I have basically been reluctant to do so to protect both me and my work. For a decade I concentrated on just the work, with a disregard to printing when shooting film. Making great negatives that are easy to wet print and not scanning annoyed mucho people. LOL.
For about 5 years I only shot film, then I bought a Leica Monochrom and printed so big and so much that again I annoyed people, got into all kinds of heated arguments, and fighting; annoying people to a whole new level. LOL.
So if you are familiar with Bruce Davidson and his work you might understand the epiphany I experienced at TEDx Mid-Atlantic. Think of Davidson's Welsh Coal Miners, East 100th Street, and his work involving the Civil Rights struggle for equality, and I now realize that the body of work that I shot over the past decade involves community activism, giving a voice to the underserved, and un-equality. The work is not really about me at all, except I come from the position of being a long term New Yorker who knows this city from the 70's, and that I am a gentrifier of Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Long Island City, and currently East Harlem.
At TEDx I was awaken and realized without thinking I was putting out there something so important that for a decade it remained transparent. I interacted with about 10 of the 33 presenters at TEDx. Some I met in the Green Room, and others either engaged with me or I engaged with them at either the reception or the supplied lunch Saturday. There was a great acknowledgement of this body of work presented in a folio of 32 2x3 images.
So now things esculate. There seems to be a breakout of sorts, where I'm engaging an inner circle of sorts that is beyond my control. I'm getting widely known whether I like it or not., and it is getting hard to remain a lazy-slacker. So now all the crazy things I have done that annoyed people now make sense. LOL. My photography speaks for itself.
And as for being a self-proclaimed community organizer validation all I have to consider is the NYC Meet-Up that is kind of a support group, and this thread. BTW never thought that this was so important to me, but in a way it is my way of putting myself out there.

Why ever did you buy that horrid thing? It's terrible in use. If you're going down this route, then spend the money and buy a Jobo 3010 expert drum. That Nikon tank is one of the worst designed pieces of gear out there. Good in theory, terrible in practice

Pro-Mone,
Do you have experience with the Nikor?
I kinda like the idea of having a tank that can do multiple formats. Also it can do 12 sheets verses six with other tanks. Kind of easy to load.
Thirdly it only cost me $100.00 and I am certain I can resell and likely get more.
I did my research and your negative comments were not shared.
I actually have practiced loading and it is kinda easy. Perhaps in 4x5 not so easy? For 2x3 it seems pretty good. Lots of other people like this tank.
If anything it is a good conversation piece, and kinda funny that it annoys you. LOL.

Pro-Mone,
Prior to this conversation I bid on a JOBO 3010. I had high bid, but I got outbid and the JOBO 3010 sold for $275.00. Ouch. JOBO's are not inexpensive.
As far as what has been reported and researched this Nikor tank was highly regarded and recommended. Also know that there is a modern Chinese clone of this tank being sold today because of demand. There is even a Chinese 5x7 version.
Anyways the challenge here is for me to get good results, and if I do I know it will annoy you. lol. I just bought an 8x10 Kodak Hard Rubber tank with stainless steel 4x5 film holders for $20.50. No doubt that dip and dunk will outperform a JOBO used as an inversion tank. I can set up a complete dip and dunk line for less money than a JOBO 3010 tank. The 8x10 dip and dunk tank also has a higher capacity and of course can handle 8x10.
Understand that Diafine, my "Slacker's Brew" was not highly regarded here on RFF, but I got the compensating effect to work for me.
I lent the Nikor sheet film tank to Joe. He saw like me the advantages: low volume; 12 sheet capacity; and easy loading. One trick that was mentioned on the large format forum was that when setting the space add additional space of about a dime. Evidently film expands when wet.
