Now this is something totally different which I don't think I've ever seen before.
I didn't take the attached photo. I scanned it from one of those gossip/fan mags which happened to be in the "lounge" as I was "relaxing" a while ago. (Yeah I know, TMI!)
Look at the paparazzo just behind the victim. I can't really tell if he has a DSLR or some kind of a video camera, but look what he has around his neck -- uh-huh, some kind of a nondescript toy digicam, most likely as a back-up.
I've just never seen that before.

A lot of Papparazzi are wannabes, not established photographers. I think what you see here is just that-someone who risked a lot of money for one camera hoping to get the "shot"

That looks like a Canon Ixus, which IMO is a pretty good digicam. If all else fails, why not use an Ixus? And guess what... that big dSLR won't get you into many clubs and places but an Ixus is so small and like a common digicam, you can enter most places with it. I guess the difference between _not_ being able to take a shot of some celeb in that high class restaurant with that seemingly new BF/GF because the doorman is keeping you out with your big honking dSLR, or being able to take the shot with an Ixus because the doorman didn't notice it and let you in, is all that matters.

BTW, that dude behind the girl looks like he's carrying a video cam. Must be a fan. Who else would want to take stills or vids of other people?!

Back in the 80's when PHd (Press Here Dummy) cameras were first coming out, a lot of PJs in NYC would carry a small one just in case. If you're earning your living delivering pictures, you better have a backup. A lot of my NYPD friends carry a second gun for a simular reason.
