Now I own an XPan - First Photos

I got one with the 45 and 90mm and i am very happy with it. 🙂
My first film was an agfa apx 400 pushed to 800 ASA.
The first time i used this film and i got some problems with it. The film was very curly and was bend like a halfpipe. So it is not sharp in the corners. I found out that the film was too cold and after warming up he was flat. Ok, next time... 😉

I'm sure you're going to love this camera. I've the same lenses and the 90 is great for street photography. The 45 is a wonderful all purpose lens. You're not going to be disappointed!

I am not familiar with these cameras, perhaps I should be but I am not. The shots do not look like 45mm photographs to me, they appear more like 35 or 25 (?). Nice compositions, by the way, especially framing the first shot through the architecture: good eye. 🙂

I've got this exact set up. You, my friend, have a terrific camera.

The lenses are crazy sharp, the camera is extremely well designed and ergonomically a joy to use...switching back and forth between regular and panoramic format, anytime you want? Genius.

This is a good street shooter, as mentioned, but also great for landscape too...a terrific outfit. The wide format takes some time to wrap your creative mind around, but you'll see how quick it comes.

On the long axis, the angle of view is similar to a 25mm lens on 36x24mm format. The Xpan 90mm lens has a long-axis angle of view similar to a 50mm lens on 36x24mm format.

Thanks, "sleepyhead." This camera doesn't take 35mm film then, which suggests that it must be very expensive to acquire film for the camera (?). I have to say I am impressed with the images.

yes, standard 35mm film. the user selects either 24x36mm (standard) or 24 x 65mm format (xpan wide). very flexible. if i remember correctly, the lenses are effectively MF lenses, of which only the wide center strip is used.

Yes, the use of standard 35mm is one thing that makes the Xpan quite a bit more economical and convenient to shoot with, compared say, to cropping a 6x6 or 6x7 negative. The Xpan II also allows mid-roll rewind so you can switch films, and then accurately reload the partially finished film. I do this quite alot with my Xpan I, but need to use a small "film leader picker" to pull the leader back out of the cassette, as unlike the Xpan II, the Xpan I pulls leader all the way into the cassette on rewind.

Also, there are some films (alas NOT Neopan 1600 any longer) that are/were only available in 135-sized cassettes.

I really need to take the time to scan some of my Xpan negs.....
