On the german Carl Zeiss Sonnar Website Zeiss give the price and the release date. The price is 850€ without VAT and the release date is the August 2006.

How come Tony has been able to maintain grey market sales when others have not?Captain said:Thats recomended retail. Tony Rose will probaby sell grey market for alot less than that.

I think the whole issue comes down to who your supplier is. ZI cameras & ZM lenses are selling all over Asia for substantially lower prices than they are selling in the West, so I imagine that it's not hard to find a supplier in the East with prices low enough that Tony or anyone else can sell in the West at a discount.
Pure speculation, but my guess is that CameraQuest's problem has to do with their distributor relationship with Cosina & Cosina's relationship with Zeiss. It's two steps removed, but my guess is that Zeiss put pressure on Cosina, who then in turn created the problem for CameraQuest that led to their elimination of Zeiss sales. As I said, pure speculation, but I invite CameraQuest to post the information that would clear this up.
It's interesting to note that Tony Rose is not the only one who's offering discounted prices. Photo Village has the ZI for $1299 & the full line of Zeiss lenses for pretty much the same prices as Popflash.
