Now its official! Price and release Sonnar ZM

so about 1070 dollars. I guess its a little more then I was hoping, thought it would be neat if it was under the 1000 dollar mark, but cant split hairs with this one.....now if I should save for this or pick up that 50 elmar.....sigh...


ps. what is VAT for us uninitiated folk

VAT is "value added tax" -- does this go into a large pool of cash to be used for various purposes? Or is it intended for specific things, such as road projects, health care, etc.?

Sadly it is what you call "sales tax" in the US and it seems to go on nothing tangible as far as I can see.

hm...thats a valid question I thing, cameraquest got sacked from zeiss for it so I wonder if tony has made some special arangements.
 
oh im sure its nothing like that, but its is curious isnt it? Maybe its as simple as he has a large stockpile of stuff there or he is selling enough stuff (to us on rff) that zeiss overlooked him

I would assume that there's more to the CameraQuest story than we've been told. Zeiss was not the CameraQuest supplier, so they could not have been sacked by Zeiss.

I think the whole issue comes down to who your supplier is. ZI cameras & ZM lenses are selling all over Asia for substantially lower prices than they are selling in the West, so I imagine that it's not hard to find a supplier in the East with prices low enough that Tony or anyone else can sell in the West at a discount.

Pure speculation, but my guess is that CameraQuest's problem has to do with their distributor relationship with Cosina & Cosina's relationship with Zeiss. It's two steps removed, but my guess is that Zeiss put pressure on Cosina, who then in turn created the problem for CameraQuest that led to their elimination of Zeiss sales. As I said, pure speculation, but I invite CameraQuest to post the information that would clear this up.

It's interesting to note that Tony Rose is not the only one who's offering discounted prices. Photo Village has the ZI for $1299 & the full line of Zeiss lenses for pretty much the same prices as Popflash.

Indeed, ive taken a little interest in the asian prices here too, in general they are lower then those at B&H and such stores. Tony has then for cheaper then the Chinese prices, like the 50 planar is 670 here compares to 600.
 
Tony (Popflash) is not a Cosina dealer. CamerQuest is. That's how Zeiss was able to put the screws to CameraQuest (via Cosina). Since Tony has no relationship with Cosina, he can't be stong armed like CameraQuest was.
 
There are similarities & differences. The sales tax in the U.S. is imposed by the individual states & localities, not the federal gov't, & is collected by retailers as a percentage of the sales price of a given item (only Michigan has a "European"-style VAT).
