When photographing with my F100 i prefer central focus point and recompose. The rare times I use my wife's D5100 I'm not able to have a fixed central focus point, it always moves around if by accident I push the pad ...but this is a different story nothing to do with this thread, sorry!
rober
You can lock the pad and keep the central AF point

I'm sorry, Nikons are a mystery to me.

On my D2XS it's around the push-pad there's a switch that locks up the
focus points.

There's a locking ring around the D-pad. It's fairly standard on every Nikon DSLR right from the D70 I think. There's a reason for the multiple AF points. Focus recompose is not a good idea if you have very thin DOF.

Bob,
Same on my D3X.

What Pro-Mone says is true. I shoot head to toe shots a lot vertically and I reposition the focus spot rather than do rangefinder style.
Using the 51 points is very busy. I can see its use for sports, but it has limited use in my fashion shots.

Tell that to Noctilux users...

Maybe you should ask Noctilux users (Tung does not count!!!)

never found a way to lock the pad on the 5100D, as I can do on the F100

I always use focus and recompose and I don't have this issue.

Bc you shoot shutter priority and don't care about shallow dof

With my Noct-Nikkor I find moving the focus point is best for me.
I'm with Pro-Mone.
I also think that Tung's experience counts. He is a remarkable shallow DOF shooter and he has a rare-rare talent. There was a reason why he specialized in setting up sniper rifles. Seems like Leica built the 0.95 Noct especially for him.

Haha, it has a Swiss Army Knife in it as well.

I use shallow depth of field all the time... it's called using a very high shutter speed in shutter priority. It's not hard. I guess you don't actually look at my books?

Most of the time, there is no time to move a focus point to get a quick photo.

John,
A lot of the shots for Maggie's blog are verticals that are basically head to toe shots. I elevate the focus point to her head. I sometimes use the focus indicator with the Noct-Nikkor.
Today most of my shots seem to be verticals with the Noct-Nikkor. With the 28 I would agree with you, especially for quick shots.

It doesn't have one, but I've read Nikon will have a Firmware update for it soon.

Oh I get it Cal... it's smart to do. I just don't do it and you won't be able to tell with my 58mm and 85mm wide open. I guess I need something 1.2 or faster for this to matter?
Gear Alert... D800e arrived. It's looking good, it's a USA model, and it was $1375 shipped. Will go out and photograph with it after work to make sure it's working 100%.
