NYC - Here I come!

Head to the Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg on Friday evening. They open it up and you can get cheap draft beer and meet some cool folks!

Thanks for the heads-up, Damaso! We love Brooklyn Brewery's beer, but I didn't know they opened up the brewery for drinks. Very cool.

jsrockit, I called the venue and the photography policy isn't looking too promising. He said that they *might* let us in with our cameras (as long as they don't look too "professional"; I'm assuming he means SLR-like). If not, he said that most hotels in the area will let you check in the camera with a concierge. So, we might do that if they refuse access.

I was in a hotel in London in '96 with my wife who was sick and pregnant, watching the Brit Awards. Pulp did their famous, blistering version of "Common People." Holy crap, what a show. It almost felt to me like they energized the whole city. I've always wanted to see them. Enjoy it!

I have a good friend in Williamsburg who I visit occasionally. From my time there, I have enjoyed the following establishments:

-Fette Sau BBQ (amazing Pork belly)
-Union Pool (bar with outside patio in back)
-Aligator Lounge (free personal pizza with every beer you buy)
-Brooklyn Brewery (already mentioned above)

This area really is Hipsterified, so you will probably fit right in.

Make sure to take a walk across the Williamsburg Bridge, I think a night stroll is the best. on the Manhattan side of the bridge is the Essex Market with a few good shops inside and some photo opportunities. Also nearby on Grand street is the Doughnut Plant. Yum.
I don't know Brooklyn too well for food but if you're in Manhattan cheak out Eataly on 23rd between 5th and 6th avenues. There's also Chelsea Market at 15th St. and 9th Ave. Just south of there you can catch the High Line park and walk up the west side on the old elevated train line which has been converted to an urban park.
I'm in the city till the 16th. PM me if you want to meet up for a beer.

Have fun at the Brooklyn Rod and Gun Club.

I use to live in Williamsburg on the Southside before it got conquered by hipsters. Lived by the now abandoned Domino Sugar Refinery.

Best burgers is by where I live now in East Harlem: Joy Burger on Lexington and 100th Street. They also make the best wings I ever had in NYC. Because of the lack of hipsters the prices are low.

Also just down the block is Lloyd's Carrot cake on Lexington near 99th Street. This tiny storefront only sells Carrot cake and boy is it good.

BTW East 100th Street is where Bruce Davidson shot his series on poverty in 1969 with a 4x5.

I've heard Joy Burger is good. I've walked by it probably a hundred times on my way to the ACC shelter a block over.
Best burger I've had so far in NYC (probably on the east coast for that matter) is at Molly's on 3rd Ave and 22nd. Absolutely fantastic. Also one of the best pints of Guinness I've ever had as well.
I might be heading up to east Harlem on Friday to go see the rabbits at the ACC shelter. I'll stop by Joy Burger if I make it up there.

Phil,

Just one block downtown on Lex is Lloyds. You can buy Carrot Cake by the slice, but I generally buy full cakes at a time. $25.00 for a 12 pound cake with nuts and raisons. $21.50 without.

You are surely an agent of evil, Cal.

Remind me to tell you my carrot cake story when we meet on Sunday.

I cannot believe noone mentioned ICP (International Center of Photography). they have 2 cool exhibits running right now.

The LES has lots of great dive bars. My favorite was Doc Holidays. Spent many nights there drinkin with good people.

Coney Island has lots of great photo opportunities and is a really interesting place with tons of character(s).

You won't have a shortage of things to do while you're there. Eat pizza, drink great beer lots of photo ops....kinda getting jealous.

Joy Burger then Lloyd's sounds like a trip I'm going to have to make this week.

Don't get addicted like we have. LOL. Perhaps I'll see you there every week.

BTW if you only want to half kill yourself with Carrot Cake you can get the small cake for around $12.00.

Good thing I live by Central Park to do my running. LOL.
