Gear Whore #1
I went back to the Power Nation video. Been 2-3 years since I watched it. Project Lo & Slow…
Understand that the project truck was a 65 and pretty much the patina was that of a “Rat-Rod” that had a very cool original patina.
Basically 64, 65 and 66 trucks were kinda identical except for badge locations, and the 1966 had the addition of a backup light that somehow is not on my truck.
They built out a Fleetside shortbed, and my truck is a Fleetside longbed.
The QA1 coil over suspension is right up there with a Ride Tech coil over. This is the way to go for Autocross. The white 65 C-10 shortbed with the LS motor was set up for power touring and auto cross, but was also a show truck. It used the Ride Tech Coil over system with triple adjustable shocks.
The adjustability of coil overs would be wasted on my truck. It is a long wheelbase and the build is for distance crusing and comfort.
I saw the Wilwood 13 inch brakes, and the Wilwood master cylinder with an adjustable proportioning valve. I saw no power booster, so they too went with manual brakes.
Not sure the wider tubs were needed/required. I did not favor them.
My 1966 body is far from being a Rat-Rod. The OEM finish is kinda intact enough to clearly be a survivor with mucho you suck factor. I favor the old wooden original bed to honor originality.
Chevy small blocks were also OEM on my truck, but it likely would of been a 283 or 327.
Point of the video though was to do your own thing.
BTW the end result of POR-15 looks like powder coating. Also with Ride Tech all the steel parts come powder coated. I was surprised that it was not so with the QA1 suspension.
Anyways seeing this video a second time with fresh eyes and having done research and having more background was very fulfilling. They favored the build on the chassis, had a lucky find great body, and made a very cool truck with 11 pounds boost and a turbo.
On the drag strip I was disappointed. The first 2 gears with 411 rear and a T-5 tranny should have been quicker to shift. He did not spool up the turbo to really launch the truck, but then again loose flywheel bolts was embarrassing with a DNF ending.
Then no follow up. Then again not really a drag car. I love the concept though…
