I'll be heading to NYC tomorrow for a long 4 day weekend to hang out there with my girlfriend. Any specific spots I should check out that a non-photographer person would also like? Perhaps some good walks, locations, etc?

Thanks!

Great walks - across the Brooklyn Bridge, anywhere in Central Park. The Staten Island Ferry is free and gives great views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty - just stay on board for the return trip. The Metropolitan Museum steps are great for people watching and "shoot the shooter" photos as are several of the courtyards in the Museum. I could go on and on. Just put on your walking shoes (see the thread about shoes) and go.

You must see the (High-Line.) Located on 10th Ave. in the teens through the twenties. Look it up on google:) Have a good time. For Pizza, try Patsy's on First Ave, I think around 116th St. or in the general area.

Take the subway to Coney Island. A great place to photograph and a lot of fun. The weather should be beautiful for the next few days.

Go to Brooklyn Hights, take her to montague street for dinner and a couple of drinks, then take a walk over to the promenade. The view of lower manhattan and the bridges is fantastic. You'll also get in some good street shooting on montague as well.

As a secondary, take the L traing one stop into Brooklyn and get off at Bedford avenue. MUCH shooting ops. Many good cafes and resturants and the Mt. Carmel Italian feast should still be going this weekend. Very good shootong ops there as well, just don't snap any old time looking Cusines. But, if you should, tell them an old friend of Jimmy T, Rocky or Benny the Mole said to give you a pass. Your OK.

;)

Some alternate locations in case you want to explore outside the usual midtown/lower manhattan spots:

-7 Train to Willets Pt/Shea Stadium in Queens-walk behind stadium into the "Iron Triangle". Several miles of junkyards, mechanic shops, and such. Roads aren't paved, it kinda looks like the set to Mad Max.

-E Train to to Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Ave in Queens-Has to be the most diverse neighborhood in NYC. Maybe the country. Every block is different-Pakistani to Colombian to Indian to Mexican to Philipino etc. Excellent place to street shoot and there's an elevated subway overhead so the light is great.

-A Train to 181st. A major shopping hub in Washington Heights (Manhattan). Tons of people along 181st buying from the stores and from street vendors. Not chain stores, but huge discount type places. Great spot to street shoot and people watch.

-2 or 3 train to 125th street, Harlem (Manhattan). Anywhere along 125th is good for street shooting. You can also walk N or S along any of the famed wide boulevards (Lenox, Frederick Douglas, Adam Clayton Powell).

-F train to Smith/9th. Not so many people around here but the neighborhoods of Gowanus/Carrol Gardens/Red Hook are all acessible by foot from this station. You can also head over to the Red Hook ballfields to watch soccer and eat at the famous food trucks serving Latin American food from many different countries. On weekends, the place is hopping.

Hope you have a great trip!

Greenpoint, Brooklyn and West Village, Manhattan is where I shot my portraits. First place (and south, towards Williamsburg) is very trendy, lots of young people, cool bars (visit Lulu's for free pizza with your beer) and coffee shops.
Greenwich Village is nice if you enjoy fashion, lots of pretty people.

This would be a nightmare for a non-photographer. :D

Caveat: It's about an hour each way from Manhattan. If you have time, well worth the trip.

Also, after you've done most of the stuff above, Bryant Park on 6th Ave. and behind the NY Public Library is a great place to just chill out and relax. Good people watching too. I like it early on weekend mornings.
