I climbed Nyiragongo in 1979. Was hitching through Africa and whilst in Eastern Zaire an American missionary told about the volcano. Set off about 7am. in perfect weather but by the time I got to the top, the weather had clouded in. I've just got a few shots of the misty brim. By the time I climbed back down the sun was shining again. When she erupts it doesn't muck around. Lava flows out in excess of 100 kph. That region of Eastern Zaire is incredibly beautiful. Shame about all the mayhem that seems to occur there on a regular basis.

that's wild. thanks for sharing the link. nice to look at from a distance and truly fascinating, but I'm sure there isn't enough protective clothing in the world to make me feel comfortable standing as close as they folks are. wow.
