Black II with 1/1000? Unlikely I suspect. Red Scale Elmar though...

Yes, a real red scale Elmar: a triangle and not a diamond!
The camera should have a large dial without 1/1000, but it looks very nice...

True, quite nice.
The quest remains, of course, whether it's had a factory upgrade to a "new" shutter with the 1/1000th or whether it's a serviceman's klug, lost or damaged shutter speed dial replace with a IIIa dial becuse no III/II dial was available.

I'm not aware of a factory upgrade for a II from 1/500th to 1/1000th. Anyone know more?Upgrades from II to IIIa are quite common.

Hi,
Upgrading a II to a IIIa would involve the extra speed, wouldn't it? That'd me getting forgetful, and the slow speeds could be left off...
IRC, when the IIIa came out all previous models could be upgraded to its specification.

From what I've read, the scuttlebutt is that most (nearly all?) such upgrades would have been from II to IIIa or to IIIa+strap lugs. There would be nothing that would prevent upgrading only the shutter without adding the slow speeds, thereby creating sort of a "IIa".

which makes me suspect that it simply has the wrong dial. As Erik pointed out it should have the bigger one anyway and the moulding is there below to take it.
But nevertheless for someone to put a red scale Elmar on a II and use a much later (M?) case suggests they knew exactly what they wanted...
