Odd shutter sound after update

Hi all,

I notice an odd quirk with the shutter that only happens occasionally, and only since the firmware update.

When taking a series of shots, the shutter sometimes goes click-click, as though it's an exposure of about 1/15th sec instead of say, 1/200. Funny thing is, when I check the files, the exposures are all spot on, no bright frames or anything. Very odd

anyone else?

I took the lens off and viewed the shutter on a 1/8th exposure. It's the second click but after the curtain closes, so it's not like it holds the shutter open for that time.

Strange. Maybe it is giving more time to the CPU to flushing the buffer before it controls the shutter the last time?

I noticed it until I did a full reset. Seems gone now.

Yeah I heard the sound too in a quick succession of shots, but exposures were spot on. Like ken said, it is probably the second shutter closing. Quirky sound, but no adverse affect so far.

I noticed this right away and posted something about it in the "So, who's going to be the first?" thread.

For me, it happens ONLY when you make an exposure when the LCD is on. The shutter makes a long-sounding click, but examination of the EXIF data shows that the actual shutter speed was correct for the situation.

I have no idea what's producing the "long click" -- maybe there's a relay associated with turning off the LCD that takes a while to de-energize -- but it appears to be innocuous.

Why we never noticed it before: Until the firmware update, it was impossible to release the shutter while the LCD was on. Instead you'd have the infamous "double press" -- the first press on the shutter release would only turn off the LCD, then you'd need to press again to make an exposure. Now, you can press the shutter release at any time and make an exposure, whether the LCD is on or not.

The firmware update also includes an optional "quick review" function, which briefly turns on the LCD after each exposure. If you've got quick review turned on, it's likely that the LCD will be on a lot, so there'll be a higher incidence of wanting to take a picture while it's on.

Last night I shot a event using my R-D 1 with updated firmware -- probably about 300 shots -- and had quick review turned on; I did notice the "long click" probably a dozen times, when a photo opportunity would arise while the LCD was still on from a previous shot, but there were no ill effects on the pictures.

I think you nailed it... I have turned off LCD preview, and now I don't get it. So it must be some interaction that happens when the LCD is showing an image and a new image is taken.

Doesn't really bother me. I'm very pleased overall!

wicked forum, well done guys. Wow, how the internet has changed photography! Probably everything else too :)

I had it on for 3 seconds, but it would only happen in a quick succession of photos. Shoot crank shoot crank shoot crank and I'd hear that strange shutter sound somewhere during that.
