Mine is metal with a black matte finish. I don't know what the metal is.

I'm thinking about getting one, and drilling and tapping it for 1/4-20 threads. Just wondering if the material has enough True Grit to handle that.

I think it does! I have heard others have done the same.
It _is_ a serious oversight in design that it occupies the tripod socket!!
I like my R3a better without the grip. It does solve the 'hang problem' - but it puts the right hand stap lug in an uncomfortable place....

I've come to like side grip gizmos, a lot. My plan would be to use a Gordy wriststrap in the hole that I drill, along with the strap lug on the side grip (and ignore the strap lug on the body). I've got my M4 hanging near vertically in a similar arrangement, and it really suits.

Yeah, I like the Y-Strap deal best. I hang mine upside-down on a home-made Y-Stap, via a tripod shoe adaptor. My Y-Strap was made from a good quality dog leash, it also has a "quick release" feature via the clip that you usually use to hook up the dog with....

i think the grip is made from some composite plastic.
the zm grip is similar and i used a pocket knife to whittle away a bigger hole to access the film release button.

AFAIK it is made of bean curd, as cheese is not commonly available in Asia.

Photoquip makes grips for several cameras including Bessa R, Leica M series, etc.
The Bessa grip I have is metal on the baseplate and a plastic side grip, as I remember.
The Leica grips are of 2 designs (earlier and later) and all aluminum.
All these grips are nicely done and finished, and really help the use of the cameras.
And, they are fairly reasonably priced.

Update: The site is up at www.photoequip.net but under construction, according to an email from Eric. Price of an MD-Grip for the M8 is $147 (currently listed as $174 on website).

Both the base and grip are metal in my example of the Bessa grip.
I too have the ZI grip and it is different. Maybe because of the strap lug on the Bessa grip, it needed to be sturdier.

I already knew about the Photequip grip; in fact, that's what I've got on my M4. However, when I visit their site (at ".net"), I do not see any sign of a grip for Bessa cameras --- just Leica M (including M8) and Nikon FM/FE.
What am I missing?
