So I posted a while back regarding my M6's rangefinder out of alignment and I was looking for a technician local to me so I could avoid shipping across or even out of the country. Cameratechs in Ballard, WA was suggested to me. I took my camera in and dropped it off, being quoted $125 and paying $39 up front. This price seems slightly high, but I'd have paid triple that just to have it fixed locally. I was told I would be called when the work was complete.

About 8 days go by and I receive no call, so I give them a ring - to find out it was ready just 2 days after dropping it off. I go and pick it up, they are confident that it has been realigned. Seems to align at infinity correctly, which it didn't before. Put a couple rolls through it and nearly all photos were garbage. I also shoot wide open at nearly all times, so precision really makes a difference.

After shooting more test rolls I discovered that there was a big difference between my 35 and 50 lenses. It also appeared that the lens cam was touching the roller at different points on the focus ring for either lens - ie, there was a 1-2mm of play in the 'closest' part of my 35 where it did not cause the rangefinder image to move at all. This didn't happen with my 50, which caused the image to move at all points.

I returned it to the shop to be worked on further under their warranty. I kept on calling to check if it was ready, knowing I wouldn't be notified. Some days went by before the technician got back to working on it. Eventually I called and got the answer that the technician was unable to figure it out due to it being more complicated than a simple adjustment, but I would have to wait until the following day to pick it up because it was taken apart on his bench. Today I went and picked up my still non-functional camera. To the shops credit, they refunded all but the original $39 I paid. I am not too upset about this.

I just wish I had not been so impatient and foolish and sent it to a pro in the first place. Off to DAG it goes on Monday, hopefully it won't take too long. I'm seconds away from just buying an MP and selling this one. Anyway, I would avoid this place with your M because they really don't seem qualified.

Don't be in to big a hurry. Don does great work but I'm still waiting for my M4P I sent him last February.

CameraTechs has been good in past decades, and has surely "gone with the times" adjusting to what kind of stuff customers want fixed. My local repair guy (on my side of the mountains) was always happy to see me bring in a mechanical Pentax or Olympus for him to work on, as he'd become all too used to doing mostly electronics repairs on the newer gear. And much of it simply module/board replacement. He retired and closed shop, and I think in this way the expertise in working on Spotmatics and Leicas and such is fading away. It'll be just the specialists, I'm afraid.

I used DAG for some stuff and his work was EXCELLENT. He lives not that far from me when I am in Wisconsin. For what I needed quickly (mod of my CV 40/1.4), his turn around was great. The stuff I told him he could take a long time with, he did. If I needed it quickly, I would go with Sherry (Golden Touch Camera something or other). Her rep is as good as Don's and in some cases (M5 or CL work) better. I would not hesitate using her at all. Don is a great guy, but very very busy.

Just remember, Don works alone and he gets a lot of work. To his credit, he is very responsible and reliable.

Just be ready to not see your camera for some time, but remember that it'll be returned to you in better than perfect shape, and that's the best feeling there is! 🙂

I too send in 2 bodies to Don in Feb and have yet to receive a reply back of an estimate. He must be quite busy as every forum I've been on suggests sending Leicas to him or Sherry Krauter at Golden Touch. My friend used him some time ago and was happy with the repair. I'm looking forward for my M's to come home for a feeding of film.

Perhaps I will use Sherry then - I can wait a month for DAG but not 3 or 4 months...I have already been without it for too long. It must be returned to its home around my neck soon. (In working order.)

Sherry is a phone person as peter says. With e-mail it's hit or miss. She likes the phone. Most of the time she'll answer e-mails but it's not her thing. Her work is superb. She has done an M4-P and an M6 CLA for me -it took about 3 weeks each time.

I contacted Don via email for an estimate. Once he gave me a price I shipped both camera and payment. Repairs for which he already has payment for usually have priority.

You should contact him and ask for the estimate..
