I'm leaving for Washington DC on Monday, very early in the morning. It's going to be a short trip, as I'll come back on Jan 1, 2006.

Despite being a "Busman's holiday" (professional convention and recruting duty: we have a position in our department and will interview candidates there), I intend to squeeze some time in between sessions and meetings to photograph the town. Also I intend to check out Pro-Camera on I Street.

Suggestions as to what else to photograph?

I'll take all my Leica gear with (2 M6TTL, and 28, 35, 50, 90 & 135 lenses in two bags), and plenty of (slide) film. 🙂

Thanks in Advance!

where to start? VietNam memorial and wall, Lincoln memorial, Washington Monument, White House, Capital building, Since you plan on being on I street how about one of 8th & I streets 😉

Thanks, Dan... those places were in my list, but what's there in I & 8th streets?

Let's hope not a whole lot of people get nervous about my camera-carrying habits...

And, of course, the eternal protesters in Lafayette Square! 🙂

I'm not sure how much time you have, but a trip to the National Gallery is usually worthwhile. There is a photo show there now, but some of the other exhibits seem more interesting IMHO (http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/index.shtm#durand). Although it's been photographed a lot, the interior of the National Building Museum (old pension building) presents a good oportunity. Georgetown has some great architecture and there always lots of people.

If you can get over to Alexandria (use Metro) there's some fine old 19th C. architecture and some good restaurants for dining.

Depends on what you like to photograph. I've lived in the DC area most of my life & had my fill of monuments & the Mall by the time I was in elementary school. There is much more to the city than the White House, Capitol, Smithsonian museums, etc. (not that there's anything wrong w/them if you've never seen them before). If you want to see the non-touristy, non-Federal gov't aspects of DC, I suggest visiting the neighborhoods of the city like Adams-Morgan, Capitol Hill, or the ever-popular-with-tourists Georgetown (which is less touristy once you get away from the commercial areas along Wisconsin Ave. & M St.).

Rather than reinvent the wheel, here are some photo.net threads where I gave some recommendations:

Not sure why you want to visit Pro Camera, but if you don't know already, they're really Nikon (SLR) specialists, though they occasionally will have some used Leica equipment on their shelves.

Thanks a lot, guys. I'll try to check out all the links you gave me.

As for the store... I simply read it's chockfull of Leica & Nikon gear. Curiosity... besides, it's near a Peruvian restaurant I want to visit, called "El Chalan."

I grew up in DC. Wear a good coat and find your way to the Potomac just after sunrise. If you have sunlight you can find nice shots near Key, Roosevelt (route 50), and Memorial bridges.
