My guess is that the M9 will beat the d700 at least from iso 80-1600, maybe it will beat/compete with the 5d mkII in the same range. And it has quite a few nice lenses to play with too![]()
I have my doubts about the high ISO performance. I get the feeling it'll be improved. I'd really hate to think Leica would put up with that crap again from Kodak. How in the hell would they allow a sensor that performs poorly at high ISO inside the "available light king."
But I doubt it will be on par with a D700. I think it'll be more comparable to the Nikon D300 or original Canon 5D. While neither has exceptional high ISO capabilities. They're a lot more acceptable. Especially in contrast with the M8's performance in that regard, which is abyssal.
The thing that has me worried most of all is that .68x viewfinder. I keep fiddling with my M8 thinking "It'll be just like this with wider framelines." but I wonder if with the fullframe sensor, it'll be less forgiving with focusing errors.
And I get this feeling deep in my chest, that 18 months from now, we'll see an M9.2 with viewfinder options. Or at the very least another upgrade program. And I'd rather pay for it now, rather than later.

I think I will go get more friendly with my EP1 now and just be happy with it.

check out Camera's ETC. in wilmington , De or newark , De . i believe the y sell ( but not on stock ) leica equipment . good luck .
$7k. Eh. Not excessively terrible.
$7,619.50 after sales tax.
I wonder if there's a place that sells them in New Hampshire or Delaware. I would use that $619 for a road trip and pick it up tax free.
Just noticed, it includes a car charger. Not bad.
So the M8 was released at $4800 in September '06. And the M9 debuts at $7000 three years later.

Wow a lot of negative replies. I think the X1 is prettier than any other compact I've seen, and it includes the viewfinder and case does it not? It also has a friggin APS-C sensor, not a P&S tiny sensor. Apples and oranges for sure!
The M9 will sell, no matter if anyone tries to boycott it. It's the product Leica and many rangefinder users have been waiting for! I've got a fresh kidney here if anyone wants it! Luckily I do actually have savings

In my view, M9 price should be in line with prices for D700 and 5D Mark II.

Indeed, boycotts don't work. I've been boycotting Rolls Royce for years and they still haven't brought their prices down...
Some people seem to believe that they have a divine right to buy whatever they want, at whatever price they want. The real world doesn't work like this.

$2k for the X1, ouch.
Well, if it really is APS-size, it is a niche product with barely any competition, provided that it utilizes its bigger sensor to deliver a image quality superior to the competing MFT cameras and Sigma DPx.
It should find some professional buyers in the mountaineering/expedition/travel reportage field, where weight considerations always have given high end point-and-shoots a smallish slice of a professional market. And it will inevitably sell among those that previously bought the Leica badged Panasonics at list price without haggling - i.e. the disgustingly rich or careless. For the rest, it will really depend on whether the quality is up to the price - I would not spend twice the cash on a camera with 10% better images, but I might do so if it were twice as good (which is rather unlikely, though, given the relative merits of 4/3 and Kodak APS-C sensors).

I wish I were disgustingly rich enough to be careless

You don't get to be rich by being careless.

No, but not everybody who is rich has become so by exerting care, and not everybody who exerts care in some matters does so in all matters.

He who dies with the most toys wins. I have never heard it said that they have to be expensive toys.
Let them have their M9 I say.

We'll see what the price will actually be in a few hours, but these don't seem out of the ballpark to me.
If the M9 has the same price around the world, then USD 7 000 means a price of NOK 41 500 in Norway. That's what the M8 and M8.2 have cost all along here.
I'm just hoping they don't put our glorious 25% sales tax on top of the price, or I may have to get on a plane to the US to buy it.

Personally, I surprised that the intro price of the M9 was not several thousand dollars higher. To be fair you should look at the intro price of the D200 compared to the D700 to see that there is a penalty price wise to pay for a FF camera over a DX camera. If the M9 performs as well as a D700, then nobody wanting a FFRF should have any complaints. Unfortunately the M9 is not in my future being a price point or two too far.

nice M9 is really out now, good for those who can afford it already.
am hoping to find used M8 (with all its poor low light capacity and IR issues) for Christmas, under 2k

Has there ever been any product where you got the US price without your local sales tax?
