oh my, big mistake...BIG mistake...

I have owned the X1 and the X100. I sold them both together with a whole heap of other gear to fund a new start in photography. The xp1 is everything you have heard about it and I can't wait for the 60mm lens to become available in Australia. At the same time, with the change I bought an R D1 and a cv 35 to keep my feet on the ground.

Do you really need the slr gear?
 
do i need the dslr gear...maybe.
i am finding it harder to focus manually these days.

that is part of the attraction of the fuji, the af...and it feels like a rangefinder in my hand.

I hear you on the focusing issue. In fact, I am going to eventually sell my M9 and invest in the Xpro-1 system. Not concerned with potentially slow auto focusing issue. My aging eyes agree, slow is okay.

I know about the ageing eyes problem. I intend to restrict myself to the 35/2.5 and not bother about wide apertures. Hopefully that will prolong my rangefinder days.

Very Homeric. Straight out of the Odyssey. Someone needs to tie poor Joe to the mast to keep the sweetly singing sirens from luring him into more trouble. Of course, there's always the chance that you get more pangs of GAS and tire of this, moving on to something else. We'll all be watching and waiting. Meanwhile, how about posting some pix??? From any of your gear.
 
Okay, I've come up with an anti-GAS medication (anti-FLATuLENT???) that will work for Joe if not for others here.

How about if you make a deal with yourself. "I won't buy the Fuji until I first find the perfect bag." Since the perfect bag doesn't exist, you'll be in limbo indefinitely. Right? No, of course, not. I tried. At least, the lack of funds burning a hole in your pocket will slow you down a little on this one.

I get the eyes problem because I notice the same thing but it tends to affect me more in low light ... in decent light a rangefinder is still very quick for me. I don't see you posting a lot of images here that are shot in what I'd call the extremes of low light so I don't see that the RD-1 would be a problem. Unless there are things about your vision I don't know.

Just trying to save you from yourself here Joe! 😛

i'm a diabetic...one day the eyes are fine, next day i have problems focusing...apparently it has something to do with pressure behind the eyes...some diabetics can have several pairs of glasses and see which works best for a particulay day.
 
and to add to what keith said, even if you DO need to shoot low light, for those occasions (and lets be honest its probably the minority of most work, well i should say for me atleast to some extent) the R-D1 and a fast lens push quite nicely at 1600, and for your eyes, getting great at scale focusing will be ideal. The AF often fail in that light anyway. My 35 1.2 and 50 1.4 have not put me in a situation where i couldn't get the shot, except!! for the rare AYE-AYE forest exhibit i saw, which is a pitch black (with blue ambient light) exhibit where the aye aye live (nocturnal). But to be fair, my d700 couldnt do it either, at any ISO. 🙂
