No. An image doesn't need to be passed through bubblegum photoshop plugins in order to be appealing. Any viewer can see a good composition and image beyond muddy grayscale.
Besides, a good long grayscale is desirable in BW photography.

Oh no... because you can feel the tension when you look at this photo.

Tension, just because a white man is talking to a black man? We would need to see more of their facial expressions to determine whether there is tension. These 2 could be best buddies for all I can see in the photo. Since you were there taking the photo, you are privy to more information than the photo provides. You heard the exchange between them. I can't.

I agree Ned. I was fishing for a response out of the poster. Thats why I put a hook (question mark) at the end of my comment. Personally I like the image.

The only evidence that I see that an exchange of angry words might be going on is that something has grabbed the attention of the onlooker standing against the wall. The white man has an expression of possible fear but to me he looks to have more of an expression of just being wrapped up in conversation. Can't see the expression of the black man who's possible expression might be the more upset.

I think we need to see the face of the other guy to show the interaction between the two and to get a sense of their conversation. If you could have moved a couple of paces to the left to get his face and managed to get the onlooker in the background between the two to create a "triangle" and cut out some of the distracting background behind the white guy as my eye is getting drawn up the street, then you might have nailed it.

If you feel that you failed then go out there & try again. Turn your feelings of failure, which can lead you feeling depressed (like I have been feeling lately) to a positive and go & shoot more, which BTW I need to do myself.

If you were a real invincible street shooting ninja, you'd have been within 1 meter and standing between the 2 guys arguing, using a 21mm lens at most! I could not do it myself as I do not feel invincible.

Ok, the story is that these two guys were arguing about global warming (of all things) and the young guy was trying very hard but the older man didn't seem to much care so at this instance the older guy was basically saying "this is what I think and its right..." and the younger guy was "hmm...".
But I thought and this is purely my opinion that no matter what the younger guy said the older guy would have disagreed with him anyway and its not because of race it was simply the ego of a larger more confident man against a meek and smaller man.

I'm definitely feeling the tension. I agree about the distracting elements. The onlooker is good. I like the columns behind the onlooker. I really like the tone/contrast of the image. Seeing both of their faces would add a lot to the image (at least I think it would-- can't tell). I'll be happy with street photography "failures" like this any day.
