OK Folks, what is Missing? How can we improve RFF ?

Great forum like it is, and I generally am liking change for the sake of change less and less with each passing day.

But there is one somewhat bothersome issue, and that is having to resize photos before posting. I'm for bigger images, not smaller -- sorry to those with tablets -- after all this is a photo forum.
Like your assumption, but it is not a mistake the forum name mentions a type of photographing GEAR, rather than images
😉 <----

The community that exists here is one of RFF's defining features, due I feel to members' general willingness to impart encyclopedic knowledge without showing off.
So many positives, so here are some suggestions.

Suggestions:

- gear database with member reviews. penetaxforum example mentioned earlier. another good one is http://www.dyxum.com/lenses/index.asp
- like option +1
- regular photo contests (don't need prizes) and a Hall of Famehttp://www.dyxum.com/photogallery/DPC/dyxumphotocontest.asp
-an easy way to save part written posts.
- users can delete their own posts but not whole threads they start

RFF is responsible for a big hole in my wallet that the moths use as a front door, but I whole heartedly forgive it 😀

In Classifieds, I would like to be able to sort by country in some manner.
Favicon please. RFF seems to be one of the very few sites I visit regularly without it.

I echo the suggestions to be able to find my own posts more easily.

I think while discussing image sizes, limit them both in minimum and maximum sizes.

I seldom post images but when I do they are between 1000 and 1200 pixels on the longest side, so some might consider me and offender in that regard. But what I really don't understand is, in 2014 with fast internet and computers, large screens, large storage devices and high megapixel count cameras, are people content to post images that are 600-800 wide?

I'm more annoyed by these postage stamp sized pictures, because; this is the point of our craft....decent images. There is no point discussing high end cameras ad nauseam when there is no savoring of the fruit.

Half of the time I'm restricted to mobile (3G) access - my country house is way out in the middle of nowhere, cut off from all land lines. With only 1GB per month before my "flat rate" is rate limited into nothingness (and no better network available at that location), I'm all for "the smaller, the better" - if you want it big, please post a link rather than the image itself...

Greatly cut down the number of stickies on many forums. Some are over a full screen long and vastly out of date. I understand some are there for moderation reasons but many are duplicates.

...yes, I agree wholeheartedly about the "like" function. Submitting a whole post just to put "+1" makes threads unnecessarily long...
That would be just as well taken care of by a "Thanks" button, without the need for a "Like" button.

...Isn't a 1024 standard just fine? Is anyone having trouble with that? (it does not exist now...I'm making a suggestion).
640 seems too small and 800 is not as common on each photo storage site (500pix, flickr etc...)...
Seems to me a 1024 maximum is fine, but isn't it possible for the BBS to enlarge only the width of the post in which the large picture has been placed, while leaving the rest of the posts on the page at their original or standard size?

Several posters have already mentioned both points, but I'll throw in my 2 yen as well.

* Limit the maximum photo size that can be posted in a thread. No more than 1280 pixels in the horizontal direction please!

* More user friendly classifieds feedback system. A good system is already in place, it just needs to be easier to access.

Thanks for the great site! As some people have mentioned, what would be cool is a system compiling all information about a certain piece of equipment, including reviews and repair, along with images taken using that equipment as tagged in the gallery. So if you looked up a IIIf, you'd find reviews, repair info and sample images.

I don't see how "like" and "thanks" are the same thing. They mean different things altogether. If someone posts something I agree with, why would I say "thanks"?

Actually there is one thing that bugs me but god only knows how to address it. People are constantly posting oversize images in threads that instantly make the thread unwieldy with the need to side scroll. Threads that are affected in this way are a pain and I avoid them.

Though I don't know if this an be corrected with software ... I doubt it!
Dear Keith,

YES!

Cheers,

R.

I have been here only a few years but the "look" of the site has always been the same. And it is ok by me too. But maybe you could change the look up a bit? Just something fresh. Membership and basic forum mechanics is outstanding imo.

Maybe talk Tom into making some more of the rff soft releases for M's and Nikon F's... 🙂
Why?

Change for change's sake?

Cheers,

R.

Some suggestions:

1. Don't allow people to delete their threads, perhaps locking them in after a set amount of time.

2. Yes on the lens databasse. Check out the m mount group on flickr and note how useful their tagging has become. https://www.flickr.com/groups/m-mount/ Perhaps that's a feature for Camera quest?

3. Support the eccentrics - some die, some get banned, some leave. Don't be quick to ban. I miss almost all of them.

4. Get a meaningful search feature or enable Google site search as your own. Not everyone knows about site: searches via Google.

It's not the LOOK that makes the forum cool but the people ... can't change them and would not want to.

I'm one of those folks that likes sites to be simple to use and navigate so I would look at ways of making it easier to use the site and all its features rather than making big changes.
