OK Folks, what is Missing? How can we improve RFF ?

... I only we could post photos in the Polls Forum it would be easy to set up a proper, democratic competition ... just a thought

PS .. that doesn't come across on the page as contemptuously as it did in my head

... Just take a look at the two below screenshots and tell me which one is more appealing....
I prefer the RFF sample.
+1 . And the RFF version can, optionally, include an avatar, that is not used in the RFF sample, but is in the WetPixel sample. Just to give a 'like-versus-like' comparison 😉 .

jkrumstick has included two screen shots and again mentions 'wetpixel'.
The first is appalling!
Just bad design because of a 'readability' issue - too many characters on the line!
I'm pretty happy with what we have at present, and from what I gather so are most viewers. Just no point in changing just for change sake.

This is a great forum!

Just one thing I can think of: As I shoot film exclusively (I think many people on here still do) I'd like to have an 'ignore' function not only for users but for whole subforums (everything digital except scanners 😉 ). To make it clearer: It would be great to be able to select the subforums I'm interested in and when I'm logged in, only threads of these forums appear on the home page.

Or maybe there's already a way to do that?

I would like to reiterate my desire for a better buyer and seller feedback process.
I've bought and sold several items here and would like not only to give, but to receive feedback on those transactions. Other than one (buried) designated seller feedback thread, I really don't know a way to leave or receive feedback for a purchase. I see "stars" and transaction numbers next to certain members' names in the classifieds, but I sure don't know how to post feedback to those ratings.

Disallow the ability for members to delete a thread they created on their whim. We've lost great stocks of knowledge (that many forum users have contributed to) based on one person's hurt feelings (or whatever other reason).

++1!

old & correct enhancement

As a forum, I think it's been great! However, over the years, a huge mass of knowledge are now buried in the subforums and threads. Many people suggested a lens review type of area, and I would like to suggest a wiki-style setup. Allow members to create/modify pages. We can start with lenses, but expand it to include cameras and even techniques. I think well organized information can be very powerful.

OK Folks,

What can I do as an administrator to improve RFF ?
I am open to suggestions.

I am not so much looking for tiny improvements,
as I am for BIG improvements and/or Added Features.

And PLEASE, no comments about the moderation. It is a given that Moderation is a constant battle which can by definition NEVER satisfy Everyone.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Stephen

The preceding post, just before this, by Hosermage, seems a pretty good suggestion. I really have no criticisms. And I don't think there is any need to be touchy about the moderation. I think it's well done here. Not too much, not too little. Moderation here is practiced with restraint--done in moderation, you might say! Ben Franklin would approve: He said, "all things in moderation--including moderation".

I have been a lurker here for sometime and the most annoying thing for me is the countless sections. If a thread is not active in the main page, it might as well be lost forever.

Not viewing photography as a competitive endeavor, for me, a camera club-type competion would be the kiss of death, even if there were no prizes or winners but only a "high commendation." The same thing for voting by moderators or peers, but I won't elaborate...

Agree. Kind of like watermarking your images with fancy script and borders. I don't want to see RFF turn into a local craft show in some parking lot.

Removing or at least altering the anachronistic (and frankly, ridiculous) limit of 100 private messages would be a nice and super-simple change with a totally negligible impact on resource usage 🙂

I'd like to see a considerably improved classifieds search and more control of my profile in easy to reach places.

currently it takes a lot of effort to see my own posts. far too much, IMO. also, it's too difficult to navigate between my forum profile and my classifieds profile. I would like to see them play nicer with each other.

This is true. I have no idea to track old posts. Conversations are missed, sometimes, I'm sure. A list of my post history would be a good start.

A subscribed thread function might be cool, too.

I don't know if these things are even possible to implement, because I find it to be an issue with most message boards. If it can't be done, that's fine too. This is a great place as is.

Once I thought a "like" button was a good idea, but the more I think 'bout it the more I see it ads nothing to a forum. It would fit the galleries, but not the threads (and yes, I do use and do like Facebook...)

Regarding the picture size, this is what another site I visit has to say about it:
Dyxum.com said:
Be mindful of members with smaller and lower resolution screens and keep size of images under control. The suggested size is no more than 1024 pixels wide and no more than 960 pixels high.

Regarding this reply
But what I really don't understand is, in 2014 with fast internet and computers, large screens, large storage devices and high megapixel count cameras, are people content to post images that are 600-800 wide?
I would like to add that were not living in 2009, these days people use tablets and smartphones - not 24" desktops.

Automatic sizing has some disadvantages, I wouldn't go there on a serious photography site.

The Pentaxforums gear database is nice, but also take a look over at Dyxum.com for some inspiration as their lensdatabase also is great.

In general I'm quite pleased with this forum. Somehow people feel real here - I like that. Whatever you do, be careful that you don't destroy the character of RFF!

Just some brainstorming ideas - love 'em or hate 'em...

1) Start hosting blogs where RFF'ers can link their gallery photos or tutorials or reviews or posts, etc... and allow other other RFF'ers to follow them. This allows us to go to one place to view contributions by specific RFF'ers.

2) Detailed gear reviews from reviewers who can get loaner equipment from manufacturers

3) Knowledge Management database that allows an RFF'er look up "how to" do specific tasks, e.g., develop b&w film, convert color into B&W in PS, etc...

4) A video forum?

Exactly! I couldn't have put it better.

I like the RFF very much, always a good read and many topics fitting for me. What I do not like and prevents me even from more posts, is that strange methode to uplode photos. I do not want to joing flickr, so I only get photos in post stamp format. Please change that, all other features can keep as they are - IMO.

With kind regards,
Walter

You could upload to the RFF gallery and then access the image address from there.
