OK so I was wrong about large images, they are indeed a problem. I've just come across one that's 1500x590 meaning that it takes up the full width of my 24 inch monitor. Personally I restrict the width of my own images to 900px, so maybe a max of 1000px is about right.

I like how on the L-camera forum users can add "Thanks!" to posts that they agree with, or appreciate.

I haven't been following this thread, as I'm pretty much okay with the way things are. But I glanced at the calendar today for the first time, and I don't know if this has been mentioned, but it ends at Dec 2006. Would be nice to get that "up to date".
Keep up the good work, Stephen.

The cool links box on the left hand side of the RFF front page still contains a reference to the defunct dslrexchange site.
Overall, RFF is pretty good at what it does, so no real changes required AFAIC.

I have never been able to make the function to renew a classified ad to work. All seems well including payment for the ad on Paypal, then it just stops and the ad doesn't appear. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Also, all items that come to the end of their term end up being classed as sold. It's a bit disconcerting when trying to dig up old ads to re-list them.
These are minor points though; I love the site.
Cheers,

Moderation or censorship?
Moderation or censorship?
Last night I suddenly saw the elephant in the room. Going back to a thread on the Leica-T in order to respond to a long and detailed post I had seen in the morning but had not had the time to respond to, I saw that that post and a batch of others, including a couple of my own posts, had simply been deleted without any indication of the deletion. Furthermore, I then wrote a post on the that thread addressing this issue, to which someone responded — but this morning found that my post and the response to it had been deleted, again without any indication of the deletions.
I am not against moderation of threads and forums, but to simply delete posts without informing the posters and indicating that posts have been deleted is simply censorship. Unless this issue is addressed, I'm outta RFF and shall remove all threads I've started! Not that anyone may care, but I won't put up with censorship.

I think the fact that we're not supposed to talk about it indicates that it is an extremely serious problem that's way out of control.
I expect your post to be deleted and I expect my response to be deleted, and I am fairly certain that whoever deletes them won't even notify any of the other mods about their decision to do so, likely causing the sort of confusion and headaches that seem so common on this forum, and which I literally never experience on any other forum - ever - at all.

Well, if this (major) problem is not dealt with satisfactorily, then I will be outta here. No reason to put up with this type of nonsense.

So this thread started 4 weeks ago, and a lot of guys have contributed.
Some very good points and suggestions.
Some repetition - only to be expected.
Some dubious suggestions.
And the manner of deletion of postings and the subsequent notification has been raised under the name of 'censorship'.
The latter issue I think is serious because it's at the heart of the forum.
Nevertheless, what happens now?
Four weeks of contributions have been made.
What response is there going to be from the 'powers that be'?

I will ask the 'Powers that Be' what has happened

Most forums gallries are slow to navigate. Something slick and easy to search. I notice when I leave a comment on a picture it's hard to get back to where I was at after I leave that picture. It's not just RFF but most forums. After I leave a comment a return to link, unless I am missing it?
I think it would increase traffic in the gallery.

By all accounts, there is a member of the mod team who has form for this. I've been subjected to it.

I do agree you should have been notified why your post was deleted. Not notifying you the reason for the deletion was an oversight. Apparently it was deleted because a Mod considered if off topic to the discussion. Said messages have been moved here http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142038
However if you have not done so, take the time to read the RFF Guidelines and TOS. Admins and mods may delete any post or thread. All the internet forums I have ever been a member of have the same policy.
This thread has been going awhile. Next week I will have the time to go thru this thread and respond / comment on the suggestion and initiate some improvements. Thanks to all who have contributed.

There isn't much you can do about the lack of civility that has overtaken RFF the last few years, is there?
A practical improvement - a longer inactivity timer. It's frustrating to get up for a coffee refill and find the forum unread has reset. The inactivity timer should be at least 30 minutes.

Threads with images, suffer from random display sizes and random to nonexistent links, where instead they should reinforce the gallery as a storage place.
I'd like to see better integration of photo postings using the gallery as a repository. And, a better "image quoting" mechanism for when you like a photo, or want to embed it.
Any time you link to an image from the RFF gallery, it should automatically post in a default size, but also include hooks back to the original, the shooter, the title, the original's location in a gallery, and a click to the largest size available. Hover, and the lens info, title or other metadata should be visible. I see a lot of images that are just bare, without link or anything, so you can't easily see what else that person does without a bunch searching.
It is too much to expect a bunch of different, non-techie persons to post images consistently. So you'd have to automate things. You could do that with some coding: Each image has an image number. Click on it, in any context (post, comment or gallery), and it opens the pasting dialogue with all the hooks pre-created. Maybe a second reference in the same thread creates a thumbnail instead of repeating the same big image.
That would bring images up in importance, so they could compete better with gear threads!

Better search capabilities. I have more luck searching through Google to find RFF threads than I do through the RFF search. Otherwise, this forum is great.
