Ok, I think have tried everything, but...

... I can't set up the X-Pro1 viewfinders to an acceptable compromise. I wear progressive lenses and need about +1.25 for reading and only a slight correction for distance. The OVF is nice and clear but the EVF is obviously blurry - causing a problem with manual focus and pleasure of use. I tried the suggestion of using a diopter (+1) to clear up the EVF, but it makes the OVF unusable.

I like the OVF for general use but I am coming to the conclusion that the Hybrid finder on the X-Pro simply doesn't cut it. The out of focus EVF without the diopter is just too irritating to live with, but fixing it eliminates the ability to use the OVF. Other than this, the camera is great. It looks like I will leave the diopter on most of the time, reducing the X-Pro to, effectively, a bigger XE-1.

I think the only thing that could possibly work would be to add a -1 diopter in front of the OVF window. Does this sound feasible? The -1 should cancel out the +1 for the OVF only, right? If sounds reasonable, I would just have to find a large coverage -1 to cover the window. I was hoping there was a film or plastic type -1 contraption I could find (like those plastic sheet magnifiers ). Is anyone aware of this type of material?

Thanks

Interesting. I wear +1.25 for reading (left, shooting eye) as well, but have had no problem adapting to the X-Pro1 VF. As we age our ability to compensate decreases and that may be the relevant difference. You might put up a tweet to the Fuji Guys with a tiny URL link to this post, and see if they have suggestions.

Yeah I think aging eyes are part of it. Thanks for the Fuji guys suggestion.

You might want to think about selling the XPro1 and moving over to the X-E1. The X-E1 viewfinder has a dioper adjustment, brighter EVF screen with higher resolution, and the optics of the viewfinder provide greater eye relief for glasses wearers. I'm thinking of switching to the X-E1, as I wear glasses and might find the X-E1 more comfortable to use.

Basically, that's what I have with the diopter on since the eye relief is not a real problem for me - an EVF only camera. But if I want, I can still unscrew it and use the OVF. Plus, the used prices of the X-Pro1 are so bad it may cost money to do that "downgrade" by the time the X-E1 is available (if buying new). Or, I can wait until used X-E1s are out a few months and dropping... :)

I never did get used to progressive glasses. Single vision or contacts for me.

Given u only need 1.25 adjustment. Have u thought about a cheap pair of drug store reading glasses to use w/ xp1 instead? Not sure if any easier than unscrewing the diopter.

Good luck

Ok, NOW I have tried everything!

I decided I would live with the blurry OVF most of the time and leave the diopter on. But I was using a Nikon +1.0 D and it has no rubber protective ring and it would scratch my glasses, so I found a Fuji +1 with the rubber ring.

I put the Fuji on today and it is totally different from the Nikon! The fuji fixed the EVF - it is now perfectly clear, and it barely changed the OVF - I can't really notice any blurriness. I am very happy now with just about everything about the X-Pro1.

There is a significance difference between the Nikon and Fuji +1 diopters - I have no idea why, but at least my problem is solved.

Good 4 u...

I wonder if base reference 0 is different. I mean one of them (Fuji or Nikon) is really a -1 not zero... Or vice versa.

I see what you mean - they may be basing the correction on different vf starting points. I hadn't thought of that...

This type of eyepiece attachment is not calibrated with the strength of the attachment. It is calibrated with the total strength of the whole system when attached to the camera for which it is designed. Apparently the base focus (apparent projected distance to the VF image) that Nikon sets their cameras to is somewhat different than what Fuji uses. The Fuji attachment is "weaker" and while strong enough to allow your eyes to focus on the EVF it isn't disturbing your ability to focus on the OVF image too much.

It still indicates that Fuji has failed to match the two VFs. A distinct flaw in the execution of their dual VF design. Anyone with significant presbyopia (read: limited focusing range; nearly fixed focus eyes) will have the same issues regardless of the method they use to obtain correction.

Yes it is a flaw, and a very frustrating one at that. I can't see how it can be solved fully without a built in adjustment for the evf. But the diopter works great for me, so my X-pro complaints are now minimal.
