8 books is indeed not a lot. However, I do understand the feeling that the money might be better spent on film and processing. I'm feel the same most of the time so instead of buying a lot of books I just drop by the bookstore 2 or 3 times a month and look at all the new photo book arrivals. I hardly ever feel like I have to 'own' a specific book. Seeing the pictures is enough.
That being said, there's many a book that I didn't buy to save money that is now out of print and worth quite a bit more on the used market.
