first, let me say that i have nothing against sharpness, even all the way into the corners...

but, i also have nothing against images with soft corners...even landscapes and architectural shots...in fact, i may prefer a touch of softness in the corners for people and street scenes.

am i a bad person? ;)

or a bad photographer?

You’re evil. You’ll end up in hell. That’s just it. Arrange that with yourself. Just gave you the truth, you have to handle it, as you asked for it.

That's why Xenars and Tessars are great lenses....

And why I overdid the software vignetting in Camera Raw for a few months when it first came out, I thought it looked cool.

I've never understood this obsession either. For most purposes, the subject of the photograph should be in focus. Even landscape photographs usually have a single point of focus (usually not in the corners) to pull the viewer in. As long as the subject is in focus and it is a good photograph, why spend time staring at the corners?

Then again, I like the look of vintage lenses, where this is fairly common. FWIW.

i may have to change my identity...

but seriously folks...why do so many talk about sharp corners?

Because they need something to talk about.
Seriously, sharpest lenses are the ones being most expensive. And you’re not good, when you didn’t spent much money in your gear. So sharpness has to be good, right?
That’s, what they think.
Sometimes I like it, too, as sharp is sharp and sometimes I want something to be sharp. But if you like blur in the corners, why not?
I mean, it’s not a problem, if you change your identity, as you already said.

It only matters if your coping a flat page or similar...IE: 2d subjects
Even our eyes are sharp in the central part of what we see.
So, the lens sees as we see in real time. unless it is highly corrected, like a Macro Lens.

Get the 15 Joe.... An interesting lens on any format. (FF, 1:3, 1:5, maybe u4/3s with interesting vignetting)

Expensive gear means little. lens review microscopic nitpickery means nothing.

But yeah, turn yourself into the police right now you soft corners loving pervert!

Yes, you've hit the nail in the head here. You obviously haven't been made aware of the rules, as excerpted below:

1. All lenses must be sharp all the way into the corners. At all apertures. At all distances. Possession of any lens not meeting these criteria is considered an affront to all photography - you've been warned.

2. You must shoot brick walls or test charts on a regular basis, or your lens will become unsharp, and thus unable to make photos.

3. Correct internet posting protocol dictates that 100% crops must accompany any images you post on the internet. All posting is to be restricted to technical/ camera forums only.

4. You must upgrade your camera body every 12- 15 months. Possession of a camera body that has been superseded, or that fails to meet the requisite amount of megapixels, will cease to take photos suddenly and abruptly.

5. Lenses are to be at least 6 inches long, 77mm filter threads minimum, at least 2 lbs in weight, and at least f2.8. Scratch that - only shooting with professional quality zoom lenses is permitted. Only exception is superfast exotic telephotos. Don't get cute by even mentioning off-brand lenses.

7. You must have no gaps in focal length coverage from 12mm to 400mm.

6. You must carry all your gear with you at all times, including laptop and tripod.

7. If you have not yet photographed a wedding, you must do so with all haste, lest your gear crumble, and you face ridicule by all your internet photo forum acquaintances.

8. Only permitted photographic subjects: flowers, pets, young children. Permitted exceptions: are weddings, as per rule 7.

There are more, but since losing all sanity, breaking most of the above and shooting inferior film cameras, my brain has turned to sawdust.

;)

I want all corners sharp!

... when I am taking a picture of my prints that are too big for my scanner :)

What the hell? The only acceptable subject is a newspaper tacked to the wall.
