Old Leitz/Leica Bag Strap length?

I picked up a fairly ratty old Leitz/Leica bag- the one that the M Classics bag is based on.
The strap seems ridiculously short, though. Adjusted for full extension, the bag hangs down a bit past 'rib level' on me, and thats on my measly 5'6 frame.
I will admit that I'm used to having my camera bags bouncing against my arse , so perhaps this is just a case of the bag being a different style than I'm used to?
Any owners of this bag out there that can chime in?

I have one of the burgundy-canvas-and-dark-brown-leather models of this bag. The strap is not particularly long but neither is it as short as you've described. I'm average height and my bag definitely isn't one that just tucks under my arm, as you've seemed to experience with yours.

Some years ago I used the tan-and-light-brown model of the bag. I seem to recall it having a longer strap than my current one.

These bags certainly would have been contracted out by Leitz. Easily could be variations.

Mine is the tan-and-brown, and I think 'The variation' might be a good name for it, haha.

I have one of these in tan. if my strap ever needed stitching or replacing, I'd be inclined to move the spot where it attaches to the bag. It's a P.I.A. to get comfortable with it having the strap mounted to the back of the bag rather than the sides. it never seems to rest flat over my shoulder. but for the $19 I paid, I can't complain (not even about the coffee stains from the previous owner).

With the straps on the back of the bag, it's easy for the bag to droop outward when the flap isn't holding it closed. That used to bug me with my tan bag. Gear could fall out (especially if I had to run) or kind of be on display as I worked. With this burgundy bag, I'm using a Tenba padded insert that just barely fits inside. The rectangular shape of the insert gives shape to the bag. It doesn't droop. Feels much more secure.
