I had this combination for a bit as well. I solved the focusing problem by installing a Nikon magnifying eyepiece (don't remember the exact name of the part, but they're often available on eBay)... worked great.
Well, I admire those who can perceive the focus confirmation light outside the frame while at the same time keeping the focus brackets on top of the point you want to focus on. My visual dexterity ain't good enough for that but then I prefer AF with DSLR's anyway and I have the AF lenses I need.
All Nikkors, except the ones requiring mirror lockup, work fine on the D40. I use pre-AI lenses on my D40 all the time.
There's no metering or AF but the RF focusing works fine.
